Background: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is a highly aggressive form of thyroid cancer associated with a very poor prognosis. Anaplastic transformation most commonly occurs in the thyroid itself or within regional lymph nodes. Here we report the case of a patient with papillary thyroid cancer, presenting with colon perforation as a result of anaplastic transformation of metastases in the mesentery tissue.

Background: Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with macrovascular invasion has an extremely dismal prognosis. We report a rare case of multiple HCC with tumor thrombosis in the portal vein and inferior vena cava that was initially treated with hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC); later resection revealed pathological complete response.

Case Presentation: A 75-year-old man presented with HCC in his right liver, with tumor thrombosis growing to the right portal vein and the inferior vena cava, and bilateral intrahepatic liver metastases.

The present study examines the effects of NTC-801, a highly selective acetylcholine (ACh) receptor-activated potassium (KACh) channel blocker, on atrial fibrillation (AF) in a canine model with electrical remodeling. An experimental substrate for AF was created in dogs via left atrial (LA) tachypacing (400 bpm, 3-5 weeks). NTC-801, dofetilide, and flecainide were intravenously infused for 15 minutes, and the effects on AF inducibility, atrial effective refractory period (ERP), and atrial conduction velocity were examined.

Background: The acetylcholine-activated K(+) current (I(K,ACh)) is a novel candidate for atrial-specific antiarrhythmic therapy. The present study investigates the involvement of I(K,ACh) in atrial fibrillation (AF) using NTC-801, a novel potent and selective I(K,ACh) blocker.

Methods And Results: The effects of NTC-801, substituted 4-(aralkylamino)-2,2-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzopyran-3-ol, on I(K,ACh) and other cardiac ionic currents (I(Na), I(CaL), I(to), I(Kur), I(Kr), I(Ks), I(Kl), I(KATP), and I(f)) and on atrial and ventricular action potentials were examined in vitro.

We examined the role of glutamatergic transmission within the basolateral amygdaloid nucleus (BLA) in pain-induced aversion using a conditioned place paradigm and an in vivo microdialysis technique in rats. Microinjection of MK-801 (1 or 10 nmol/side) into the bilateral BLA 5 min before intraplantar injection of formalin dose-dependently attenuated formalin-induced conditioned place aversion (F-CPA) without affecting nociceptive behaviors, such as lifting, licking, and biting. On the contrary, microinjection of neither CNQX (30 nmol/side) nor AP-3 (30 nmol/side) showed any significant effect on F-CPA.

Background/aims: The association between transfusion and recurrence after resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still under debate. The influences of perioperative blood transfusion on survival and recurrence after curative hepatic resection for HCC and prognostic factors in patients with blood transfusion were evaluated.

Methodology: Curative hepatectomy was performed in 210 patients (57%) with and 158 (43%) without perioperative blood transfusion.

Neuroblastoma (NBL) is a common pediatric cancer originated from the neuronal precursor cells of sympathoadrenal lineage. NBLs show a variety of clinical phenotypes from spontaneous regression to malignant progression with acquirement of resistance to therapy. To understand the molecular mechanism of the genesis, progression, and regression of NBL, we need to identify key molecules determining the neuronal development of sympathoadrenal lineage.
