Background: Children with cystic fibrosis are more likely to become severely unwell with influenza-associated illness compared to children without chronic lung disease. The provision of accessible influenza vaccinations is essential in the prevention of infection.
Objectives: To describe the prevalence of the influenza vaccine uptake in children with cystic fibrosis from 2016 to 2020 at a single tertiary paediatric hospital site and determine if the COVID pandemic of 2020 and the introduction of telehealth encounters affected the vaccine uptake.

The causal effects of one's socioeconomic status (SES) on outcomes are typically examined by experimentally manipulating SES self-perceptions based on one of three SES dimensions-absolute resource, relative resource, and general social position. We investigated the efficacy of these manipulations by systematically meta-analyzing their effects on SES self-perceptions. Based on 107 eligible samples ( = 26,203), manipulations of SES self-perceptions across the three SES dimensions were effective overall ( = 0.

Genome replication and other viral activities take place in structures called replication organelles (ROs), which are invaginations induced in the ER membrane. Among the required elements for RO formation is the biogenesis of viral nonstructural proteins NS4A and NS4B.

Common structural and function dysfunctions include but are not limited to patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), ligamentous and muscle tears, muscle sprains/strains, stress fractures, pes planus, plantar fasciitis, and shin splints.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the correlation between acute and chronic pain, overuse injuries, and observational and palpatory findings upon evaluation to establish common trends of somatic dysfunctions and determine possible etiology of the pain/injury.

An international workshop on "Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change and Air Pollution" took place at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Nanjing, China, during 23-27 October, 2023. Experts working in various multi-disciplinary areas of agroecosystem and environmental research gathered for academic communication and discussions. Two discussion groups focused on "agriculture under air pollution and climate change: current challenges and priorities for the future" and "adapting agriculture to air pollution and climate change: current status and next steps.

Background: There is limited evidence in the literature regarding the temporal changes of preeclampsia-related biomarkers during pregnancy in high-risk women who develop preeclampsia despite the administration of aspirin prophylaxis.
Objective: This study aimed to compare the temporal changes in mean arterial pressure, uterine artery pulsatility index, placental growth factor, and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 across gestation in women identified as having high risk for preterm preeclampsia receiving aspirin prophylaxis and low-risk women without aspirin treatment.
Study Design: This was a prospective longitudinal nested case-control study of 2007 women with singleton pregnancies who participated in the first-trimester screen-and-prevent program for preeclampsia at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China, between January 2020 and May 2023.
Recent advances in cystic fibrosis (CF) treatments have led to improved survival, with life expectancy for Australians living with CF at 57yo. As life expectancy improves, long-term cardiovascular disease risk factors (as for the general population) will become an issue in these patients. We hypothesized that increased leukocyte expression of vasoconstriction and pro-fibrotic mediators may contribute to CF severity in adults with CF.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA main goal of epidemiology is to provide an impact of an exposure on health outcomes. The attributable fraction (AF) is a widely used measure for quantifying its contribution. Various methods have been developed to estimate AF, including standardization, inverse probability of treatment weighting, and doubly robust methods.

Antenatal betamethasone increases lung surfactant production in preterm babies, and we therefore tested this therapy in experimental maternal asthma. Ewes were sensitised to house dust mite allergen, and an asthmatic phenotype induced by fortnightly allergen lung challenges; controls received saline.

We aimed to examine the relation between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular risk factors using two genetic variants as instrumental variables: alcohol dehydrogenase 1B () rs1229984 and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 () rs671.
Methods: Using data collected in the Taiwan Biobank-an ongoing, prospective, population-based cohort study-our analysis included 129,032 individuals (46,547 men and 82,485 women) with complete data on rs1229984 and rs671 genotypes and alcohol drinking status.
Heart failure, a major public health issue, often stems from prolonged stress or damage to the heart muscle, leading to cardiac hypertrophy. This can progress to heart failure and other cardiovascular problems. Doxorubicin (DOX), a common chemotherapy drug, and isoproterenol (ISO), a β-adrenergic agonist, both induce cardiac hypertrophy through different mechanisms.

While these clinical consequences of cirrhosis are well described, it remains poorly understood whether hepatic insufficiency and the accompanying elevations in ammonia contribute to HCC carcinogenesis. Using preclinical models, we discovered that ammonia entered the cell through the transporter SLC4A11 and served as a nitrogen source for amino acid and nucleotide biosynthesis.

Future climate change may bring local benefits or penalties to surface air pollution, resulting from changing temperature, precipitation, and transport patterns, as well as changes in climate-sensitive natural precursor emissions. Here, we estimate the climate penalties and benefits at the end of this century with regard to surface ozone and fine particulate matter (PM[Formula: see text]; excluding dust and smoke) using a one-way offline coupling between a general circulation model and a global 3-D chemical-transport model. We archive meteorology for the present day (2005 to 2014) and end of this century (2090 to 2099) for seven future scenarios developed for Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project.

Ammonia (NH) is the most abundant alkaline gas in the atmosphere, mainly emitted by agricultural activities. NH readily reacts with other atmospheric acidic pollutants, such as the oxidation products of sulfur dioxide (SO) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), to create fine particulate matter, which has far-reaching effects on human health and ecosystems. Here, we investigated long-term atmospheric NH trends in South Asia (SA) using satellite observations from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI).

Sde proteins have two additional activities of unclear relevance to the infection process: K63 linkage-specific deubiquitination and phosphoribosyl modification of polyubiquitin (pR-Ub). We show here that the deubiquitination activity (DUB) stimulates ER rearrangements while pR-Ub protects the replication vacuole from cytosolic surveillance by autophagy.

Methods: To further evaluate the preclinical potential of SB, we have set a dose-escalation study in C57BL/6J male mice to test effects of ad libitum 20 mg/mL SB and 50 mg/mL SB and their combinations with ABX in the DID procedure for 4 weeks. Effects of these SB concentrations on ethanol consumption and bodily parameters were determined for the duration of the treatments.
Surveillance case definitions are utilised to understand the epidemiology of communicable diseases and to inform public health actions. We report a case of hepatitis B infection that meets the case definition for newly acquired infection. However, further investigation revealed that this was most likely past resolved hepatitis B infection with subsequent reactivation secondary to immunosuppression, rather than a newly acquired infection.

Purpose: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a leading cause of joint arthroplasty failure, potentially leading to critical complications like vertebral osteomyelitis (VO). The factors contributing to VO after PJI and the outcomes for these patients are not well understood. Our study aims to (1) identify risk factors for VO following PJI and (2) assess the clinical outcomes in these cases.
