Best technique for upper lid eversion.

Aim: Lid eversion is an essential component of contact lens aftercare. Hence, this study determined the best method of lid eversion based on three criteria: comfort, speed of administration and the area of the palpebral conjunctiva exposed.

Method: Twenty-five participants (aged 20-34) had 6 different techniques applied in random order by the same clinician on two separate occasions: three involving a cotton bud placed on the extended upper eyelid either centrally, at the top of the tarsal plate or off-centre; one using the wooden end of the bud placed at the top of the tarsal plate; one using the clinician's index finger to evert the lid; and one using a silicone rubber, finger-shaped substitute.

Bilateral Testicular Infarction from IgA Vasculitis of the Spermatic Cords.

A 51-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presented to the emergency room with increasing bilateral leg pain, rash, and scrotal swelling with pain. Skin biopsy from his thigh revealed IgA-associated vasculitis. Due to hematuria, a renal biopsy was performed and showed an IgA glomerulonephritis with focal fibrinoid necrosis and neutrophil accumulation.

Glaucoma and driving: Are we documenting driving status and advising patients with glaucoma appropriately about their driving?

Purpose: Guidelines from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in the UK state that patients with bilateral glaucomatous visual field defects must stop driving unless confirmed able to meet minimum visual field requirements. Guidelines from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists state that ophthalmologists must consider driving status in every consultation, provide appropriate information if visual problems may affect driving and document any advice that has been given. The authors aimed to investigate whether in glaucoma clinics: (1) driving status is being documented, (2) appropriate patients have been advised to inform DVLA and (3) there is documentation that this advice was provided.

Targeting leukemic side population cells by isatin derivatives of nicotinic acid amide.

Side population (SP) cells mediate chemoresistance in leukemia. However, chemical inhibition approach to target SP cells has been poorly studied. Herein, we report the discovery of isatin derivatives of nicotinic acid amide as potent side population cell inhibitors.

2-((Benzimidazol-2-yl)thio)-1-arylethan-1-ones: Synthesis, crystal study and cancer stem cells CD133 targeting potential.

In order to develop a potent anti-tumor agent that can target both cancer stem cells and the bulk of tumor cells, a series of 2-((benzimidazol-2-yl)thio)-1-arylethan-1-ones 5a-o was synthesized. All compounds were evaluated for their anti-proliferative activity towards colon HT-29 cancer cell line. In addition, their inhibitory effect against cell surface expression of CD133, a potent cancer stem cells (CSCs) marker, in the same cells was evaluated by flow cytometry at 10 μM.

Enhancement and validation of an Arab surname database.

Objectives: Arab Americans constitute a large, heterogeneous, and quickly growing subpopulation in the United States. Health statistics for this group are difficult to find because US governmental offices do not recognize Arab as separate from white. The development and validation of an Arab- and Chaldean-American name database will enhance research efforts in this population subgroup.

Association between circulating interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) levels and IL-1β C-511T polymorphism with cervical cancer risk in Egyptian women.

It is believed that the host genetic factors such as inflammation-induced cytokines may play a role in cervical carcinogenesis. The interleukin-1β (IL-1β) gene contains several single nucleotide polymorphisms.

Adiponectin and some inflammatory and endothelial markers in type-2 diabetes with and without cardiovascular disease.

This study was designed to examine the association between adiponectin and C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and endothelin-1, (ET-1) and their possible role in prediction of type-2 diabetes and development of diabetes and macrovascular complications. Forty subjects were studied. They were classified into four equal groups: Control, newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes, diabetics with old myocardial infarction (OMI) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) groups.

Dilated examination of patients referred with minor lid complaints--is it necessary?

Objective: To evaluate whether dilated fundus examination is necessary on patients presenting to clinic with lid complaints and normal vision.

Methods: Patients with lid complaints were recruited from general and emergency clinics. Patients with visual symptoms or previous ophthalmic history were excluded.

Background: The high success rate of dental implants has changed the quality of life for many patients. Immediate loading finds its application in some clinical cases and certainly adds another modality of treatment for the implant patient. Starting with a few implants immediately loaded with a bar overdenture in the mandible, the concept of immediate loading evolved to loading multiple implants in both the maxilla and mandible.

Background: The use of external hex titanium implants is widely accepted; however, in the past few years, they have been placed by using not only the traditional two-stage surgical protocol, but also the one-stage surgical protocol. The aim of the present study was to compare the success rates that can be obtained from two-stage surgeries (conventional protocol) and one-stage surgeries when double acid-etched surface external hex titanium implants are used.

Tumour necrosis factor-alpha in comparison to adenosine deaminase in tuberculous pleuritis.

Background: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is already used for the differential diagnosis of tuberculosis pleurisy. Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) is another marker which has been investigated for this purpose.
