Using Critical Incident Assessments to Understand Nursing Students' Perceptions That Impact Learning.

Nurse faculty have a responsibility to examine nursing incidents that have a negative effect on students and identify methods for improvement. The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' perceptions of weekly incidents that impact learning in order to alert faculty to problems early in the program of study. A qualitative descriptive design was used to identify common themes of first-semester BSN students' perceptions using Brookfield's Critical Incident Questionnaire.

The Impact of Preoperative Education on Patients Undergoing Elective Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: The Relationship Between Patient Education and Psychosocial Factors.

Background: Preoperative education has been found to be responsible for patients having a realistic expectation of surgery as well as high level of satisfaction with their recovery. The Joint Academy offers preoperative educational classes for all patients undergoing elective knee and hip replacements.

Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine whether the education provided by The Joint Academy has an impact on anxiety, expectation, and preparedness in patients who undergo elective total knee or hip arthroplasty.

Induction of labour (IOL) is a common obstetric intervention. 32% of women are induced per year in our obstetric unit. We were experiencing delays in starting IOLs due to unit activity, protracted inpatient stay and dissatisfaction among staff and service users.

End-of-life care is an important nursing competency and must be incorporated into the baccalaureate nursing curriculum. The purpose of this research was to examine the outcomes of an actual hospice compared with a simulated hospice clinical experience. This pretest and posttest nonequivalent 2-group design consisted of a sample of 65 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a community health course.

Factors Affecting Urinary Retention in Critically Ill Trauma Patients.

The objective of this retrospective study was to gain a better understanding of patient and care factors that may contribute to urinary retention in critically ill trauma patients. Fifty trauma patients over a 1-year period with an International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code for urinary retention were identified and analyzed. Most patients had an indwelling urinary catheter placed on admission, and it was reinserted in 39 patients.

Quality Improvement in Clinical Nutrition: Screening and Mealtime Protection for the Hospitalized Patient.

Purpose: The purpose of the quality improvement project was to (1) enhance awareness, accuracy, and use of the validated nutrition screening tool by the nurse and (2) improve compliance to the nutrition care plan that included increasing patient meal intake percentage.

Description Of The Project: Nurses were provided with an in-depth educational program focused on the implementation of the nutrition screening tool on patient admission to the clinical site. Second, a unit-level patient protected mealtime program was implemented in an effort to decrease unnecessary mealtime interruptions and promote nurses and nursing assistants to assist with meals during mealtime to improve patient meal intake percentage and, finally, to encourage collaboration between the clinical nurse specialist, unit level nurses, and registered dietitians to improve patient nutritional care.

Stroke Transitions of Care.

This quality improvement project focused on improving patient education and patient satisfaction, and reducing all-cause 30-day readmissions. A 72-hour discharge follow-up telephone call was completed in patients discharged home with diagnosis of stroke.

The Impact of a Cultural Immersion Study Abroad Experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Study abroad programs have increased dramatically. Most programs are short-term and include a cultural immersion as well as classroom and/or service learning. In this article, the authors discuss a study abroad program to China that included cultural immersion and classroom learning specific to traditional Chinese medicine.

Delirium: Why Are Nurses Confused?

Nurses have a key role in detection of delirium, yet this condition remains under recognized and poorly managed. The aim of this study was to explore nurses' knowledge of delirium-related information as well as their perception of their level of knowledge.

Improving transition of care for veterans after total joint replacement.

Background: Patients transitioning from hospital to home are at risk for readmission to the hospital. Readmissions are costly and occur too often. Standardized discharge education processes have shown to decrease readmissions.

How useful is dual energy lateral vertebral assessment in a clinic setting?

Screening for osteoporotic vertebral fractures traditionally involves X-ray of the thoracic and lumbar spine. We evaluated use of dual energy X-ray technology in patients with osteoporosis. We found this technology useful in the clinic setting and it has advantages in that less radiation is delivered to the patient.

Arch support use for improving balance and reducing pain in older adults.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of arch supports on balance, functional mobility, and pain in the back and lower extremity joints among older adults.

Design: A single-factor within-subjects design was used.

Method: A convenience sample of older adults formed a single group for fitting with arch supports.

Self-disgust mediates the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions and depressive symptomatology.

Disgust has been linked to several psychopathologies, although a role in depression has been questioned. However, it has recently been proposed that rather than general disgust sensitivity, disgust directed toward the self (self-disgust) may influence the development of depression, providing a causal link between dysfunctional cognitions and depressive symptomatology. This possibility was examined by developing a scale to measure self-disgust (the Self-Disgust Scale; SDS) and then using mediator analysis to determine if self-disgust was able to explain the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions (measured with the use of the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale) and depressive symptomatology (measured with the use of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale).

A study of male patients with forearm fracture in Northern Ireland.

Osteoporosis, although considered less common, still occurs in men. We present a cross-sectional study of a group of Northern Ireland men with low-trauma forearm fractures to determine the presence of osteoporosis and screen for secondary causes of low bone mineral density. Male patients aged 30-75 years, presenting with distal forearm fracture in 2000-2001 in Northern Ireland, were identified through a Colles fracture database.

Healthy elderly individuals do not inevitably lose bone density and weight as they age.

There have been relatively few extended longitudinal studies of bone mineral density (BMD) and anthropometric characteristics in the elderly. We recorded baseline measurements (height, weight, body mass index (BMI)) and BMD in 292 relatively healthy individuals (mean age: 75 years females, 76 years males) who were followed up over 8 years. At baseline, a significant inverse relationship was noted between increasing age and BMD at the neck of femur in both sexes.

This article explores the multidimensional challenges and suggests strategies to provide safe care for the patient who is obese.

Effects of T'ai Chi exercise on fibromyalgia symptoms and health-related quality of life.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM), one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, is associated with high levels of impaired health and inadequate or limited symptom relief. The cause of this complex syndrome is unknown, and there is no known cure. Numerous research results indicate that a combination of physical exercise and mind-body therapy is effective in symptom management.

How reliable is a radiological report in osteoporosis in diagnosing low bone density?

Patients are often referred to osteoporosis clinics with a radiological diagnosis of osteoporosis. Previous studies attempting to ascertain risk of osteoporosis from radiographs have been conflicting. The aim of our study was to determine how reliable spinal radiographs were at detecting low bone density compared with Dual Energy X ray Absorptiometry (DXA).

Tolerability and compliance with risedronate in clinical practice.
