Background/aims: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare subtype of gastric cancer. We aimed to identify the clinicopathological features and rate of lymph node metastasis (LNM) to investigate the feasibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric LELC confined to the mucosa or submucosa.

Methods: We compared the clinicopathological characteristics of 116 early gastric LELC patients and 5,753 early gastric well- or moderately differentiated (WD or MD) tubular adenocarcinoma patients treated by gastrectomy.

Background And Aims: When treating undifferentiated-type early gastric cancer (UD-EGC) that is limited to the mucosa (clinically T1a), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) can be considered if the tumor is 2 cm or less and is not ulcerated. However, there is insufficient evidence to determine the relationships between tumor size and oncological safety of ESD in UD-EGC.

Methods: The pathology reports of Korean patients who were diagnosed with UD-EGC (n = 5286) were retrospectively reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgery combined with chemotherapy is the standard treatment for locally advanced gastric cancer (GC) and gastroesophageal junction cancer (GEJC), but outcomes are often poor, especially in specific genetic subtypes like dMMR/MSI-high.* -
  • Analysis from several clinical trials shows that patients with MSI-high tumors generally have better survival rates than those with MSS/MSI-low tumors, and that female patients with MSS/MSI-low tumors tend to live longer than their male counterparts.* -
  • The study emphasizes that sex can influence the effectiveness of treatments for both MSI-high and MSS/MSI-low non-metastatic GC/GEJC, with surprisingly higher chemotherapy risks noted in females with MSI-high cancers.*

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in chemotherapy and immunotherapy have allowed some stage IV gastric cancer patients to undergo conversion surgery after significant tumor regression from palliative chemotherapy.
  • A study involving 118 patients at Samsung Medical Center evaluated various baseline and post-chemotherapy features, finding that 21 patients achieved a complete pathologic response and 97 patients were downstaged.
  • Important factors for prognostic evaluation included BMI, HER2 status, and other molecular markers, suggesting that conversion surgery can be an option for more patients regardless of their initial disease severity.

Background: Patients with gastric cancer often encounter impaired quality of life and reduced tolerability to adjuvant treatments after surgery. Weight preservation is crucial for the overall prognosis of these patients, and exercise and supplemental nutrition play the main role. This study is the first randomized clinical trial to apply personalized, treatment stage-adjusted digital intervention with wearable devices in gastric cancer rehabilitation intervention for 12 months, commencing immediately after surgery.

Background & Aims: Post-gastrectomy vitamin D deficiency can result in osteoporosis and fractures, which can decrease patient quality of life and increase their socioeconomic burden. However, because there is no consensus around preoperative measurement and regular postoperative monitoring of serum vitamin D [25(OH)vitD] level for gastric cancer patients, we performed a retrospective study with a single high-volume center experience.

Methods: We reviewed a database of 614 gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy between December 2015 and December 2019.

Background: While many studies investigated changes in working status in cancer survivors, most studies have been performed in survivors of breast cancer and few studies evaluated factors associated with changes in the working status of cancer survivors comprehensively. We aimed to evaluate the changes in the working status of cancer survivors after diagnosis and socio-demographic, clinical, work-related and psychological factors associated with it.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adult patients with cancer who were working at the time of diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative blood test results on advanced stomach cancer patients and to see who benefits more from combined chemoradiotherapy versus chemotherapy alone.
  • Among 1,032 patients who had surgery and were treated with either chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, the study narrowed down to 692 patients for analysis.
  • The findings highlighted that absolute monocyte count was a strong predictor of survival outcomes, and patients with a high absolute lymphocyte count showed better recurrence-free survival when treated with combined therapy.
