Pancreatic cancer is influenced by interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME), including tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Specifically, CD8 + T cells impact prognosis by eliminating cancer cells. Recent studies have revealed that microbiomes are present in pancreatic tissues and may affect tumor growth and immune responses.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) presents significant clinical challenges, highlighting the importance of understanding its molecular mechanisms. While store-operated Ca entry (SOCE) is known to play an essential role in tumorigenesis and metastasis, its specific implications across various RCC subtypes remain underexplored. This study analyzed SOCE-related mRNA profiles from the KIRC and KIRP projects in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, focusing on differential gene expression and overall survival outcomes.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated during normal cellular energy production and play a critical role in maintaining cellular function. However, excessive ROS can damage cells and tissues, contributing to the development of diseases such as cardiovascular, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative disorders. This review explores the potential of nuclear medicine imaging techniques for detecting ROS and evaluates various radiopharmaceuticals used in these applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer is linked to tissue stiffness caused by cancer-associated fibroblasts, and EUS-TA is used for diagnosis but often gives false negatives due to insufficient samples.
  • This study examined the relationship between tissue stiffness measured by EUS-elastography and the number of needle passes needed in EUS-TA for diagnosing pancreatic cancer.
  • Results showed that while the diagnostic yield remained similar across stiffness levels, patients with stiffer tumors required significantly more needle passes (3.6 vs. 3.2) to achieve a proper diagnosis.

  • The study explores the relationship between masticatory difficulty (trouble chewing) and chronic cough using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011-2015.
  • Findings show that individuals with masticatory difficulty have a higher prevalence of chronic cough (4.8%) compared to those without such difficulty (3.0%).
  • The researchers suggest that masticatory difficulty could be a clinical indicator for chronic cough, highlighting the need for collaboration between dental and respiratory health professionals for better patient care and further research into related health issues.

EGFRvIII is expressed only in tumor cells and strongly in glioblastoma and is considered a promising target in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Aptamers are synthetic single-stranded oligonucleotides that bind to biochemical target molecules with high binding affinity and specificity. This study examined the potential of the Ga-NOTA-EGFRvIII aptamer as a nuclear imaging probe for visualizing EGFRvIII-expressing glioblastoma by positron emission tomography (PET).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between corticosteroid use and the development of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), aiming to identify which patients are at risk and the factors influencing this condition.
  • It utilized data from a nationwide cohort study in South Korea, analyzing 3,500 ONFH cases matched with control patients based on demographics and health history.
  • Results showed that high cumulative corticosteroid use (≥1,800 mg) increases the risk of ONFH, but factors such as lipid profiles and corticosteroid dosage did not influence the chances of needing total hip arthroplasty (THA) after ONFH diagnosis, indicating a complex relationship needing further investigation.

The skeletal muscles account for approximately 40% of the body weight and are crucial in movement, nutrient absorption, and energy metabolism. Muscle loss and decline in function cause a decrease in the quality of life of patients and the elderly, leading to complications that require early diagnosis. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) offers non-invasive, high-resolution visualization of tissues.

Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block and periarticular injection (PAI) provide motor-sparing analgesia following hip surgery. We hypothesized that PAI offers non-inferior pain relief compared with PENG block in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). In this randomized trial, 66 patients who underwent primary THA under spinal anesthesia were assigned to the PENG or PAI groups.

Background: The changing medical education environment emphasizes the need for time efficiency, increasing the demand for competency-based medical education to improve trainees' learning strategies. This study was performed to determine the competencies required for successful performance of robotic thyroidectomy (RT) and to determine the consensus of experts for performance of RT.

Methods: Data were collected through 12 semi-structured interviews with RT experts and 11 field observations.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate peripheral nerve block (PNB) effectiveness in postoperative pain management and surgical outcomes for displaced femoral-neck fracture in geriatric patients (>70 years) who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA).

Methods: From January 2017 to December 2021, 231 geriatric patients with displaced femoral-neck fracture who consecutively underwent BHA were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups: the patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) group (n = 132) who received only intravenous (IV) PCA for postoperative pain management, and all others who received PNB with IV PCA (PNB+PCA) such as femoral nerve block or fascia iliaca compartment block after surgery (n = 99).

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by fibrosis/desmoplasia in the tumor microenvironment, which is primarily mediated by pancreatic stellate cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts. HGF/c-MET signaling, which is instrumental in embryonic development and wound healing, is also implicated for its mitogenic and motogenic properties. In pancreatic cancer, this pathway, along with its downstream signaling pathways, is associated with disease progression, prognosis, metastasis, chemoresistance, and other tumor-related factors.

Background And Aims: It is difficult to differentiate between neoplastic and non-neoplastic gallbladder (GB) polyps before surgery. EUS-guided elastography (EUS-EG) is a noninvasive complementary diagnostic method. The utility of EUS-EG in the differential diagnosis of GB polyps has not been investigated.

Saengmaeksan (SMS), a representative oriental medicine that contains Panax ginseng Meyer, Liriope muscari, and Schisandra chinensis (1:2:1), is used to improve body vitality and enhance physical activity. However, there is limited scientific evidence to validate the benefits of SMS. Here, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo regulatory effects of SMS and its constituents on energy metabolism and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Background: A postoperative radiograph in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is usually obtained to evaluate the inclination and anteversion of the acetabular components. However, there is no gold-standard method for calculating the exact inclination and anteversion of the acetabular components on post-THA radiographs. We aimed to measure the actual anteversion of the acetabular component on postoperative radiographs by obtaining correlation data between the virtual and actual acetabular component positioning using virtual three-dimensional (3D) surgery.

Although aptamers have shown excellent target specificity in preclinical and clinical studies either by themselves or as aptamer-drug conjugates, their in vivo tissue pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis is still problematic. We aimed to examine the utility of image-based positron emission tomography (PET) to evaluate in vivo tissue PK, target specificity, and applicability of oligonucleotides. For this, fluorine-18-labeled aptamers with erb-b2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (ERBB2)-specific binding were synthesized by base-pair hybridization using a complementary oligonucleotide platform.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells do not contain various receptors for targeted treatment, a reason behind the poor prognosis of this disease. In this study, biocompatible theranostic erythrocyte-derived nanoparticles (EDNs) were developed and evaluated for effective early diagnosis and treatment of TNBC. The anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), was encapsulated into the EDNs and diagnostic quantum dots (QDs) were incorporated into the lipid bilayers of EDNs for tumor bio-imaging.
