Background: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a reversible condition characterized by gait disturbance, dementia, and urinary incontinence. Despite being underdiagnosed, surgical treatment can significantly improve symptoms. Previous studies have shown a lack of awareness of NPH among physicians, prompting further investigation into its recognition.

Transient ischemic attack and minor stroke as "surgeons affairs": a narrative review.

Objective: The scope of this paper is to review the subtypes of transient ischemic attack (TIA) and minor stroke (mS) in which a surgical treatment is needed, discussing the importance and the timing of a multidisciplinary approach, in order to achieve an optimized management and prevent major strokes or other critical complications.

Materials And Methods: The keywords "transient ischemic attack," "minor stroke," "surgical treatment," "vascular surgery," "heart surgery," "neurosurgery," and "multidisciplinary" were searched using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus. Relevant search results were discussed by the authors for references inclusion.

Lower gastric sensitivity in quiescent inflammatory bowel disease than in irritable bowel syndrome.

Objective: Visceral hypersensitivity is considered a key symptom in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), both of which seriously affect health-related quality of life (HrQoL). Previous findings are mostly based on invasive procedures that may interfere with the assessment of visceral perception. The current study, therefore, investigates whether IBD and IBS are characterized by altered perception of 'natural' gastric distensions ('interoception').

SIIV position paper: clinical approach to vulval diseases. Need for quality standards.

This paper summarizes the position of the Italian Society of Vulvology on the clinical approach to vulval disease. A thorough history (general medical, gynaecological, and vulval history) is essential for a successful and fruitful vulvological examination. Characteristics of pruritus (itch) and pain, that are the two main vulval symptoms, should be collected and reported with precision, according to duration, temporal course, location, provocation, and intensity.

Impact of energy-based devices in pediatric thyroid surgery.

Background: Energy-based devices are surgical devices increasingly utilized for thyroid surgery, owing to a reduction of operative time and surgical related complications. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether the use of energy-based devices could improve the complication rate in pediatric thyroid surgery.

Purpose: The world population is aging. As direct consequence, geriatric trauma is increasing both in absolute number and in the proportion of annual admissions causing a challenge for the health-care system worldwide. The aim of this review is to delineate the specific and practice rules for the management of mild brain trauma in the elderly.

Brain location and tumor biological markers in high- and low-grade gliomas.

Background: Recent studies suggest gliomas location may be correlated with specific biological signatures. Our purpose was to focus on the possible correlation between MGMT metilation status and Ki67 positivity with patient age, glioma location and lateralization.

Bilateral Oculomotor Palsy After Surgical Evacuation of Chronic Subdural Hematoma.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma is a common neurosurgical disease and the most benign form of intracranial hematoma. Most patients are successfully treated with simple burr hole evacuation and external drainage with good outcome and low rate of complications. Brainstem hemorrhage is a rare cause of severe disability in these patients, and cannot be ignored.

External quality assessment for EGFR mutations in Italy: improvements in performances over the time.

External quality assessment (EQA) schemes are essential procedures to assess the quality level of laboratories performing molecular testing of the epidermal growth factor receptor () gene in non-small cell lung cancer. The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) and the Italian Society of Pathology (SIAPEC-IAP) organise EGFR EQA programmes to ensure that the Italian laboratories achieve the quality standard levels required. Comparing the 2011, 2013 and 2015 EGFR EQA schemes, it was possible to observe improvements in the methodologies used and the outcomes.

Pituitary adenoma with adipose tissue: A new metaplastic variant.

Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors representing approximately 15-20% of intracranial neoplasms. There have been few reports of metaplastic osseous transformation and about 60 cases of neuronal metaplasia in pituitary adenoma but adipose metaplasia has not been previously described in the English literature. Here we report a case of pituitary adenoma with metaplastic adipose tissue in a 58-year-old male patient.

Stillbirths at Term: Case Control Study of Risk Factors, Growth Status and Placental Histology.

Objective: To investigate the proportion of stillbirths at term associated with abnormal growth using customized birth weight percentiles and to compare histological placental findings both in underweight stillborn fetuses and in live births.

Methods: A retrospective case-control study of 150 singleton term stillbirths. The livebirth control groups included 586 cases of low-risk pregnancies and 153 late fetal growth restriction fetuses.

Objective: Even though advances in surgical techniques have improved facial nerve outcomes, functional preservation is still an issue because injury to the facial nerve has significant physical and psychological consequences for the patient. We retrospectively review our data in VS surgery to compare the facial outcome in intraoperative facial monitored versus not-monitored patients.

Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma: a lesion with activated mTOR pathway and constant expression of glutamine synthetase.

Subependymal giant-cell astrocytoma (SEGA) is a rare tumor associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). TSC mainly involves the central nervous system (CNS) where SEGA, subependymal nodules, and cortical tubers may be present. First studies suggested the astrocytic nature of SEGA while successive studies demonstrated the mixed glio-neuronal nature.

Granular cell astrocytoma: report of a case and review of the literature.

A 54-year-old man with no remarkable past medical history was referred to our hospital for the appearance of generalized tonic clonic seizures with loss of consciousness, preceded by phosphenes at the right eye. On magnetic resonance imaging, a contrast-enhanced tumor in the left occipital lobe with peripheral edema was noted. He underwent craniotomy, and the entire mass was removed.

Intracranial aneurysms and optic glioma--an unusual combination: a case report.

Background: The coexistence of glial high grade tumors (glioblastoma, anaplastic astrocytoma) and cerebral aneurysms is common but the association with optic glioma is rare. The treatment of these associated lesions is problematic.

Background: In 2014 the European Medicines Agency included exon 2, 3 and 4 KRAS and NRAS testing for the selection of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients eligible for the therapy with anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies. The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) and the Italian Society of Pathology and Cytology (SIAPEC) organized an external quality assessment (EQA) scheme for CRC to evaluate inter-laboratory consistency and to ensure standardization of the results in the transition from KRAS to all-RAS testing.

Methods: Ten formalin fixed paraffin embedded specimens including KRAS/NRAS (exons 2, 3, 4) and BRAF (codon 600) mutations were validated by three referral laboratories and sent to 88 participant centers.

Expression of glutamine synthetase in balloon cells: a basis of their antiepileptic role?

Glutamine synthetase is an enzyme involved in the clearance of glutamate, the most potent excitatory neurotransmitter. We studied the immunohistochemical expression of glutamine synthetase in neocortical samples from 5 children who underwent surgery for pharmacoresistant epilepsy and a histological diagnosis of focal cortical dysplasia IIb. In all cases, balloon cells, but not dysmorphic neurons, were immunopositive for glutamine synthetase.

ALK rearrangement testing by FISH analysis in non-small-cell lung cancer patients: results of the first italian external quality assurance scheme.

Introduction: The Italian Association of Medical Oncology and the Italian Society of Anatomic Pathology and Diagnostic Cytopathology organized an external quality assessment (EQA) scheme for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement by florescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: Sections from tissue microarrays, each including 10 NSCLC samples with known ALK status, were first validated in five referral laboratories and then provided to 37 participating centers. The laboratories were requested to perform the FISH test, using their usual protocols, and to complete the analysis within 3 weeks.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an uncommon tumor regarded as "intermediate malignancy". We present the clinical, pathological and molecular features of a mesenteric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a 9-month-old male infant. The patient was referred to Anna Meyer Children Hospital of Florence, Italy, for an asymptomatic abdominal mass measuring about 7cm.
