We report the synthesis, properties, and in vitro and in vivo applications of 2'-O-methoxyethyl-4'-thioRNA (MOE-SRNA), a novel type of hybrid chemically modified RNA. In its hybridization with complementary RNA, MOE-SRNA showed a moderate improvement of Tm value (+3.4 °C relative to an RNA:RNA duplex).

We describe the synthesis and potential application of a new dumbbell-shaped decoy DNA prepared using a combination of the base pair ImO(N):NaN(O) and a copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The CuAAC reaction between the azido group on the 5'-end of oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) and the ethynyl group on the NaN(O) base of the opposite strand did not proceed, whereas that between the azido group and the flexible hexynyl group on the NaN(O) base of the opposite strand proceeded smoothly to give a new dumbbell-shaped double-stranded ODN (dsODN). The resulting dsODN had extremely high thermal stability and exhibited exonuclease resistance.

Although the respiratory function test has a long history, the standardization of technical procedures and evaluation methods is still underway. Technologists have to be familiar not only with such standardized methods but also with quality control. Recently, a respiratory resistance test using the multi-frequency forced oscillation technique and exhaled nitric oxide measurement have been developed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of "Protex" (Parker; Fairfield, NJ, USA) for disinfection of ultrasound probes. We examined bacterial contamination on ultrasound probes that were wiped with a plain paper towel, with a plain and an ethanol-soaked paper towel, or with a plain and Protex-soaked paper towel. The plain paper towel was used to remove the gel, and was contaminated by large numbers of bacteria, but the use of ethanol-soaked paper towels and that of paper towels soaked in Protex™ broad-spectrum disinfectant (Parker: Fairfield, NJ, USA) reduced those numbers markedly.

Background And Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered to be a systemic inflammatory disease, and systemic inflammation has been noted as a factor contributing to cardiovascular disease, which is one of the comorbidities associated with COPD. On the other hand, pleiotropic effects, such as the anti-inflammatory effects of statins, have attracted attention in recent years, and there have been a variety of reports regarding the usefulness of statins for patients with COPD.

Methods: We investigated whether the use or non-use of statins influenced the prevalence of airflow limitation.
