Background: Colloid cysts (CCs) are rare cystic lesions derived from the endoderm of the central nervous system. Although they appear most commonly in the anterior roof of the third ventricle, there are only a few reports of CCs located in the suprasellar region. Although CCs are considered to be slow-growing benign tumors, their developmental process remains unclear.

Background: Xanthomatous hypophysitis (XH) is an extremely rare form of primary hypophysitis characterized by infiltration of the pituitary gland by mixed types of inflammatory cells, including foamy cells, plasma cells, and small mature lymphocytes. XH manifests as varying degrees of hypopituitarism. Although several previous reports have denied a possible contribution of autoimmune mechanism, the exact pathogenesis of XH remains unclear.

The decoy receptor 3 (DcR3) gene is amplified at high frequency in human lung, colon, and liver cancers. DcR3 has been demonstrated to produce a secreted member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily that negatively regulates Fas-mediated apoptosis. In this study we examined DcR3 gene amplification, DcR3 mRNA expression, and DcR3 protein expression in 46 human astrocytic brain tumors by quantitative genomic PCR, quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, and immunohistochemistry, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The authors describe a case study of a 55-year-old man who developed shunt nephritis with ANCA antibodies after having multiple shunt surgeries for a brain abscess and hydrocephalus.
  • The patient's symptoms included a continuous fever, foot edema, and signs of renal dysfunction, with lab tests revealing positive PR3-ANCA and a specific bacteria in his blood culture.
  • Treatment involved replacing the shunt and administering antibiotics and steroids, which led to improvements in kidney function and reduction in protein levels, similar to outcomes in two other documented cases of PR3-ANCA-positive shunt nephritis.

A novel method for the simulation of the clipping position for cerebral aneurysms based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) angiography was evaluated. Rotating the regional 3D CT angiography images including the aneurysm provided the virtual intraoperative views of 36 cerebral aneurysms that were eligible for clipping through a pterional approach with a perpendicularly applied straight clip. The cut-along-trace function of the 3D CT workstation was used to simulate the clipping position.

We report a case of intracerebral pneumocephalus following a head injury. This condition is relatively rare, and only 14 cases, including the present case, have been reported to data. A 40-year-old man fell from a 3rd floor window on June 29, 1999.

Three hundred and fifty cases of patients with head injury were admitted to our hospital from 1998 to 2000. Among these cases, 10 cases manifested isolated, localized subarachnoid hemorrhage on the first computed tomographic image after the trauma. Traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage was found in the ambient, suprasellar, and sylvian fissure, Bleeding was seen in the ambient cistern or suprasellar cistern at the site of the blow on the frontal or occipital area of the head.

We report a case of ruptured aneurysm in the bifurcation of the proximal anterior cerebral artery and the frontopolar artery. A 49-year-old woman complained of sudden onset of severe headache on December 24, 2000. She was admitted to our hospital and CT scan revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage.
