Food webs in isolation: The food-web structure of a freshwater reservoir with armoured shores in a former coastal bay area.

Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone.

Depression is a common and disabling disorder in later life, particularly among people with poor physical health. There are many screening tools available that can be used to examine depressive symptoms; however, not all of them may be appropriate or accurate for older adults with cancer. This pilot study was designed to test the diagnostic performance of two screening tools and their short versions in a cohort of vulnerable (G8 score ≤ 14/17) older patients with cancer undergoing comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA).

Purpose: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) is associated with a higher frequency and more severe forms of hypospadias as well as with potential developmental differences. This study aims to characterize operative outcomes in SGA boys compared to boys born with normal weight and length for gestational age (appropriate/large for gestational age, AGA/LGA).

Methods: Demographic data, hypospadias characteristics, associated pathologies and operative outcomes of boys who underwent hypospadias repair at a single center (10/2012-10/2019) were evaluated.

Purpose: Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) procedure, combined with an intra-articular reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), is used to reduce rotational laxity and the risk of graft failure. However, concern of overtightening of the lateral compartment and subsequent osteoarthritis remains. The aim of this study is to evaluate the degenerative changes in the lateral compartment and to compare the clinical and radiographical results between two LET techniques.

Singlet oxygen (O) is the excited state of ground, triplet state, molecular oxygen (O). Photosensitized O has been extensively studied as one of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), responsible for damage of cellular components (protein, DNA, lipids). On the other hand, its generation has been exploited in organic synthesis, as well as in photodynamic therapy for the treatment of various forms of cancer.

Oncologic Home-Hospitalization Delivers a High-Quality and Patient-Centered Alternative to Standard Ambulatory Care: Results of a Randomized-Controlled Equivalence Trial.

Purpose: Given the increasing burden of cancer on patients, health care providers, and payers, the shift of certain outpatient procedures to the patients' homes (further indicated as oncologic home-hospitalization [OHH]) might be a high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective alternative to standard ambulatory cancer care (SOC).

Methods: A randomized-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the quality of a locally implemented model for OHH (n = 74) compared with SOC (n = 74). The model for OHH consisted of home administration of certain subcutaneous cancer drugs (full OHH) and home nursing assessments before ambulatory systemic cancer therapy (partial OHH).

Nucleotides bearing aminophenyl- or aminonaphthyl-3-methoxychromone solvatochromic fluorophores for the enzymatic construction of DNA probes for the detection of protein-DNA binding.

We designed and synthesized nucleosides bearing aminophenyl- or aminonaphthyl-3-methoxychromone fluorophores attached at position 5 of cytosine or thymine and converted them to nucleoside triphosphates. The fluorophores showed solvatochromic fluorescence with strong fluorescence at 433-457 nm in non-polar solvents and very weak fluorescence at 567 nm in alcohols. The nucleosides and nucleotides also showed only negligible fluorescence in alcohols or water.

The aim of this study was to assess the contemporary practice of TRT in boys included in the I-DSD Registry. All participating centres in the I-DSD Registry that had boys between 10 and 18 years of age and with a condition that could be associated with hypogonadism were invited to provide further information in 2019.

Recent dramatic expansion in potential uses of protein conjugates has fueled the development of a wide range of protein modification methods; however, the desirable single-site multi-functionalization of proteins has remained a particularly intransigent challenge. Herein, we present the application of 5-hydroxy-1,5-dihydro-2-pyrrol-2-ones (5HP2Os) as advantageous alternatives to widely used maleimides for the chemo- and site-selective labeling of cysteine residues within proteins. A variety of 5HP2O building blocks have been synthesized using a one-pot photooxidation reaction starting from simple and readily accessible furans and using visible light and oxygen.

Cervical radiculopathy caused by vertebral artery loop formation: a case report.

Vertebral artery loop formation is a rare cause of cervical radiculopathy. We report a case of a 70-year-old man who was referred because of a chronic cervicobrachialgia. Initial plain cervical x-ray showed widening of the left C3-C4 intervertebral foramen.

Adolescent and Young Adult Urogenital Outcome following Childhood Hypospadias Repair: Perfection Revisited.

Purpose: We assessed the long-term surgical, functional urinary and sexual outcomes of adolescent and young adult men who underwent childhood hypospadias repair.

Materials And Methods: Men born with nonsyndromic hypospadias and healthy male controls aged 16-21 years old were recruited, and their surgical, urinary, sexual functional and aesthetic outcomes assessed. Good outcome was defined as a patent and orthotopic meatus without fistulas, and straight erections (<30 degree curvature) without erectile or ejaculatory problems.

Acupuncture as a Complementary Therapy for Cancer Care: Acceptability and Preferences of Patients and Informal Caregivers.

Background: Acupuncture can effectively manage cancer-related side effects, for both patients undergoing treatment and for cancer survivors. It may also be effective in managing physiological and psychological symptoms common among informal caregivers of cancer patients.
