The effects of meal size and meal type on specific dynamic action (SDA) were investigated in a large, active asteroid, the sunflower star, Pycnopodia helianthoides. When the sunflower stars were fed clam flesh totalling 5%, 10%, or 20% of their body weight there was a step-wise increase in the scope, time to peak oxygen consumption, duration of the response and total SDA. The change in the rate of oxygen consumption was slower than other organisms, and oxygen uptake remained elevated for over 12d following consumption of the largest meal.
