Anthropogenic climate change has increased the frequency of drought, wildfire, and invasions of non-native species. Although high-severity fires linked to drought can inhibit recovery of native vegetation in forested ecosystems, it remains unclear how drought impacts the recovery of other plant communities following wildfire. We leveraged an existing rainfall manipulation experiment to test the hypothesis that reduced precipitation, fuel load, and fire severity convert plant community composition from native shrubs to invasive grasses in a Southern California coastal sage scrub system.

Adult granulosa cell tumours (AGCTs) of the ovary are very rare during pregnancy. To date, only five cases of ovarian AGCT in pregnancy have been reported in the literature and the patients all conceived spontaneously. We report a case of AGCT of the ovary that was incidentally discovered during a caesarean section in a patient undergoing In vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Anatomic Study of the Integrity of the Breast Lymphatic Network With Indocyanine Green in Breast Implant Surgery Through the Axillary Approach.

Introduction: The performance of a prosthetic breast augmentation through the axilla always makes the surgeon fear the possibility of damage to the breast lymphatic network. Indocyanine green is a fluorescent marker allowing the analysis of the lymphatic system. This anatomical work aims at demonstrating, thanks to the use of indocyanine green, whether the realization of a prosthetic breast augmentation by axillary way leads to lesions of the breast lymphatic network and also seeks to show the feasibility of detecting the axillary sentinel node after axillary breast augmentation.

Feasibility of the abductor pollicis longus hemitendon transfer for thumb opposition: An anatomical study.

Introduction: The abductor pollicis longus (APL) presents two muscle bellies and multiple accessory tendons available for transfer, amongst these an accessory tendon inserting on the thenar aponeurosis (APLTh). Edgerton described an opponensplasty using the whole APL tendon, but its results were limited due to the short size of the donor tendon.

Ecological restoration frequently involves the addition of native plants, but the effectiveness (in terms of plant growth, plant survival, and cost) of using seeds versus container plants has not been studied in many plant communities. It is also not known if plant success would vary by species or based on functional traits. Advances in microsurgery together with improvements in reconstructive surgical techniques over recent decades have enlarged the scope of available techniques for mutilated hand reconstruction, shifting the reconstructive paradigm from restoring hand function to providing the best functional and aesthetic results with minimal donor-site morbidity. Successful reconstruction of a mutilated hand should no longer be measured only by the degree of improvement of hand function but also by a more aesthetic hand appearance as well as by improved psychological well-being. In this article, the authors present their concept of aesthetic functional reconstruction of the mutilated hand with a focus on the indications and selection of reconstructive techniques.

It calls for complex management and necessitates the application of all current reconstruction techniques, particularly microsurgery. As regards treatment, the available therapeutic arsenal is highly diversified, ranging from a simple free flap skin graft to local and locoregional flaps.

Management of complex forearm defects: A multidisciplinary approach.

Complex forearm defects with significant damage to, or loss of skin, tendon, muscle, bone and neurovascular structures represent a great challenge for surgeons. The management of such injuries, whether a result of trauma or tumor resection, is focused on preservation of the damaged limb and restoration of hand function. A multidisciplinary approach combining plastic and orthopedic surgical expertise in a coordinated team is proposed to address these challenging cases.

Immersive Virtual Reality for Pain Relief in Upper Limb Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study explored the effects of therapeutic immersive virtual reality (VR) on pain in upper limb complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). While acute pain relief with VR has been studied in multiple populations, there is little data on the use of this modality in treating chronic pain, especially CRPS. Volunteer participants were recruited from outpatient rehabilitation services.

Multidisciplinary management of the bone and joint infection complicating treatment of an open fracture of the lower limb.

Bone and joint infections (BJI) of the lower limb can cause functional sequelae and in some cases have an impact on patient's life prognostic. One of the main objectives of multidisciplinary consultation team meetings (MTM) in the treatment of bone and joint infections is to provide an appropriate medical-surgical care, pooling skills of different organ specialists: infectious disease physicians, microbiologists, orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons. Treatment is based on aggressive debridement, bone stabilization, adequate antibiotic therapy, long-term coverage of the loss of skin substance and close clinical monitoring.

Treatment of traumatic loss of bone and tissue substance in the foot necessitates special consideration of the anatomy and physiology of the segment. The causes of foot trauma are multiple and in many cases violent, leading to progressive tissue deterioration that may require multi-phased debridement. The therapeutic objective is to reconstruct a functional foot permitting painless pushing off, walking and footwear use by restoring a stable bone framework, with resistant covering satisfactorily adjusted to the different zones of the foot.

Traumatic digit amputation generates functional, aesthetic and psychological disabilities. Such post-traumatic consequences call for a rigorous therapeutic approach, aiming at an early secondary surgical procedure - which is ideally to be performed before the patients psychologically recover from their initial trauma. The therapeutic principle consists in improving the global function of the hand, basically aiming at re-creating a quality pollici-digital pinch, ideally thin, stable, sensitive, strong, mobile enough, but also, when possible, at improving the aesthetic aspect of the hand.

Efficacy of gabapentin in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

The aim of this systematic review was to determine the efficacy of gabapentin (GBP) in the treatment of pain of  idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN). A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCO Industries), Emcare (Ovid), Medline (Ovid), Medline (PubMed), Scopus (Elsevier) and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). The inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials of GBP as a monotherapy in the treatment of idiopathic TN in adult participants and publications in English.

Virtual Reality Neurorehabilitation for Mobility in Spinal Cord Injury: A Structured Review.

The goal of this review was to evaluate the evidence regarding the use of virtual reality (VR) therapy for improvement of mobility in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases in April 2018. The phrase "virtual reality" and a combination of "spinal cord injury," "tetraplegia," "quadriplegia," or "paraplegia" were used as search terms.

Posterior tibial perforator-based flaps for leg and foot defects: Indications, limitations, and technical considerations.

Immersive Virtual Reality Therapy with Myoelectric Control for Treatment-resistant Phantom Limb Pain: Case Report.

Phantom limb pain is a condition frequently experienced after amputation. One treatment for phantom limb pain is traditional mirror therapy, yet some patients do not respond to this intervention, and immersive virtual reality mirror therapy offers some potential advantages. We report the case of a patient with severe phantom limb pain following an upper limb amputation and successful treatment with therapy in a custom virtual reality environment.

Lower limb multi-tissular injuries are rare in children but require elaborate surgical care considering the child's growth potential, donor-site morbidity and the psychological consequences for the child and his family. This review outlines the various coverage options, from simple to more complex, developing their principles and their results. Technical features of wound repair of the lower limb in children will be detailed.
