Biocement is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cement that is produced via microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) and has great potential to mitigate the environmental harms of cement and concrete use. Current production requires on-site bacterial cultivation and the application of live culture to target materials, lacking the convenience of stable formulas that enable broad adoption and application by nonscientific professionals. Chest computed tomography (CT) is essential for diagnosing and monitoring thoracic aortic dilations and aneurysms, conditions that place patients at risk of complications such as aortic dissection and rupture. However, aortic measurements in chest CT radiology reports are often embedded in free-text formats, limiting their accessibility for clinical care, quality improvement and research purposes. In this study, we developed a multi-method pipeline to extract structured aortic measurements from radiology reports, and compared the performance of fine-tuned BERT-based models with instruction-tuned Llama large language models (LLMs).

Organic electrode materials (OEMs), composed of abundant elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, offer sustainable alternatives to conventional electrode materials that depend on finite metal resources. The vast structural diversity of organic compounds provides a virtually unlimited design space; however, exploring this space through Edisonian trial-and-error approaches is costly and time-consuming. In this work, we develop a new framework, SPARKLE, that combines computational chemistry, molecular generation, and machine learning to achieve zero-shot predictions of OEMs that simultaneously balance reward (specific energy), risk (solubility), and cost (synthesizability).

Introduction: Although venous congestion secondary to elevated pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) has been hypothesized to worsen kidney function, the association of peak tricuspid regurgitation jet velocity (pTRV), a surrogate of PAP, with kidney outcomes remains uncertain in heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Methods: This analysis of the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist (TOPCAT) trial analyzed participants with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of ≥45% who had pTRV measured by echocardiography at baseline. For the cross-sectional analysis, the association of baseline pTRV with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was assessed using linear regression.

Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of intrinsically disordered proteins has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases, although direct mechanisms are poorly defined. Here, we report on a maturation process for the cellular prion protein (PrP) that involves a conformational change after LLPS and is regulated by mutations and poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid--maleic acid) (PSCMA), a molecule that has been reported to rescue Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive deficits by antagonizing the interaction between PrP and amyloid-β oligomers (Aβo). We show that PSCMA can induce reentrant LLPS of PrP and lower the saturation concentration () of PrP by 100-fold.

Plasma or urinary clearance of exogenous filtration markers is required for assessment of measured glomerular filtration rate. Although multiple methods are available, none is widely used because of their complexity, each has measurement error, and standardization is limited. Recently, a study validated the plasma clearance of a new exogenous filtration marker, relmapirazin, which can be detected by its transdermal fluorescence, potentially simplifying the procedure and increasing access to measured glomerular filtration rate.

Leveraging high performance computing, remote sensing, geographic data science, machine learning, and computer vision, Oak Ridge National Laboratory has partnered with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to build a baseline structure inventory covering the US and its territories to support disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The dataset contains more than 125 million structures with critical attribution, and is ready to be used by federal agencies, local government and first responders to accelerate on-the-ground response to disasters, further identify vulnerable areas, and develop strategies to enhance the resilience of critical structures and communities. Two ESIPT-based isomeric cyanines were synthesized with significant bathochromic shift in the optical absorption and emission , along with a very large Stokes shift. Probe 2 exhibited a longer conjugation and better photostability. Both compounds exhibited good selectivity for labeling the plasma membrane of prokaryotic cells and the hair cells of zebrafish.

We present the investigation of 1,2,4,5-tetrazine derivatives as low-cost and synthetically modular organic electrode materials in rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs). The substituents at the 3,6-positions of tetrazine were found to be critical for cycling stability. While heteroatom substituents (chloro, methoxy, and pyrazole) lead to the rapid decomposition of electrode materials in the electrolyte, the installation of phenyl groups enhances the cycling stability via π-π stacking.

Africa experiences frequent emerging disease outbreaks among humans, with bats often proposed as zoonotic pathogen hosts. We comprehensively reviewed virus-bat findings from papers published between 1978 and 2020 to evaluate the evidence that African bats are reservoir and/or bridging hosts for viruses that cause human disease. We present data from 162 papers (of 1322) with original findings on (1) numbers and species of bats sampled across bat families and the continent, (2) how bats were selected for study inclusion, (3) if bats were terminally sampled, (4) what types of ecological data, if any, were recorded and (5) which viruses were detected and with what methodology.
