Hearing loss in inherited metabolic disorders: A systematic review.

Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) have been observed in individuals with hearing loss (HL), but IMDs are rarely the cause of syndromic HL. With early diagnosis, management of HL is more effective and cortical reorganization is possible with hearing aids or cochlear implants. This review describes relationships between IMDs and HL in terms of incidence, etiology of HL, pathophysiology, and treatment.

We developed and designed a bifacial four-terminal perovskite (PVK)/crystalline silicon (c-Si) heterojunction (HJ) tandem solar cell configuration albedo reflection in which the c-Si HJ bottom sub-cell absorbs the solar spectrum from both the front and rear sides (reflected light from the background such as green grass, white sand, red brick, roofing shingle, snow, etc.). Using the albedo reflection and the subsequent short-circuit current density, the conversion efficiency of the PVK-filtered c-Si HJ bottom sub-cell was improved regardless of the PVK top sub-cell properties.

Evidence of slow and variable choice-stepping reaction time in cancer survivors with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is reported to affect up to 70 % of cancer survivors. Despite evidence that CIPN-related impairments often translate into balance and mobility deficits, the effects on stepping and quality of gait, well-documented risk factors for falls, are unclear.

Aims: (i) Establish choice-stepping reaction time (CSRT) performance in survivors with CIPN compared to young and older healthy controls and people with Parkinson's disease; (ii) document walking stability; (iii) investigate relationships between stepping and gait data to objective and patient-reported outcomes.

Spinning and Fully Integrated Microdevice for Rapid Screening of Vancomycin-Resistant .

This study introduces a spinning and fully integrated paper-based microdevice that can perform multiple functions, including DNA extraction, amplification, and colorimetric detection, for monitoring two major vancomycin-resistant (VREs), which carry the A and B genes. The spinning microdevice is composed of a stationary part and a spinning part. The square-shaped stationary part has two zones: the lysis and reaction zones.

Qualitative analysis of disposition decision making for patients referred for admission from the emergency department without definite medical acuity.

Objective: To map the physician approach when determining disposition for a patient who presents without the level of definite medical acuity that would generally warrant hospitalisation.

Data Sources/study Setting: Since 2018, our US academic county hospital/trauma centre has maintained a database in which hospitalists ('triage physicians') document the rationale and outcomes of requests for admission to the acute care medical ward during each shift.

Study Design: Narrative text from the database was analysed using a grounded theory approach to identify major themes and subthemes, and a conceptual model of the admission decision-making process was constructed.

Background: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) bloodstream infection (BSI) management remains challenging for clinicians. Numerous in vitro studies report synergy when vancomycin (VAN) and daptomycin (DAP) are combined with beta-lactams (BLs), which has led to clinical implementation of these combinations. While shorter durations of bacteremia have often been reported, there has been no significant impact on mortality.

Testing role of green financing on climate change mitigation: Evidences from G7 and E7 countries.

The study estimates the long-run dynamics of a cleaner environment in promoting the gross domestic product of E7 and G7 countries. The recent study intends to estimate the climate change mitigation factor for a cleaner environment with the GDP of E7 countries and G7 countries from 2010 to 2018. For long-run estimation, second-generation panel data techniques including augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF), Phillip-Peron technique and fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) techniques are applied to draw the long-run inference.

In vitro antiviral activities of ethanol and aqueous extracts of Vietnamese traditional medicinal plants against Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus: a coronavirus family member.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes diarrhea in pigs leading to severe illnesses and high mortality rates. The development of medicinal agents to treat PEDV infection is therefore crucial. In this study, antiviral activities against PEDV of ethanol and aqueous extracts of 17 Vietnamese traditional medicinal plants were evaluated using the cytopathic effect-based assay.

Evaluating the Combination of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and Clomiphene Citrate in Treatment of Male Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism: A Prospective Study.

Background: In this study, we evaluated MHH patients who wished to preserve fertility, assessing the efficacy of a short course (12 months) of a combined hCG +clomiphene citrate.

Materials And Methods: The cross-sectional study included 19 patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism who were admitted to the Andrology and Fertility Hospital of Hanoi between March 2016 and March 2018. Using hCG every three days in combination with clomiphene citrate 25mg per day until normal testosterone levels are reached, maintain the dose until spermatozoa are present.

Psychobiotics for Patients with Chronic Gastrointestinal Disorders Having Anxiety or Depression Symptoms.

Purpose: Using psychobiotics to modify the gut microbiome has been shown to improve the anxiety and depression situation of patients with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. This study evaluated changes in depression, anxiety, GI symptomss and side effects when patients used a multispecies probiotics product.

Patients And Methods: A single-center uncontrolled trial was conducted in patients with chronic GI symptoms, anxiety and depression who used a multispecies probiotics product.

Crystal structures of two camelid nanobodies raised against GldL, a component of the type IX secretion system from Flavobacterium johnsoniae.

GldL is an inner-membrane protein that is essential for the function of the type IX secretion system (T9SS) in Flavobacterium johnsoniae. The complex that it forms with GldM is supposed to act as a new rotary motor involved in the gliding motility of the bacterium. In the context of structural studies of GldL to gain information on the assembly and function of the T9SS, two camelid nanobodies were selected, produced and purified.

Modulations of Cardiac Functions and Pathogenesis by Reactive Oxygen Species and Natural Antioxidants.

Homeostasis in the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cardiac myocytes plays a critical role in regulating their physiological functions. Disturbance of balance between generation and removal of ROS is a major cause of cardiac myocyte remodeling, dysfunction, and failure. Cardiac myocytes possess several ROS-producing pathways, such as mitochondrial electron transport chain, NADPH oxidases, and nitric oxide synthases, and have endogenous antioxidation mechanisms.

Association between empathy and clinical symptoms in chronic schizophrenia: A large sample study based on Chinese Han population.

Background: In patients with schizophrenia, clinical symptoms and cognitive impairment are its core features, both of which have a significant impact on the prognosis and functional outcome. Empathy, as an important social cognition, has been found to be associated with the clinical symptoms in schizophrenia, but the conclusions on this issue are inconsistent. Therefore, this study will continue to explore it through a large sample of inpatients with chronic schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population.

Genome-wide analysis of SARS-CoV-2 strains circulating in Vietnam: Understanding the nature of the epidemic and role of the D614G mutation.

Genome-wide analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains is essential to better understand infectivity and virulence and to track coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and outbreaks. We performed whole-genome sequencing of 27 SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated between January 2020 and April 2020. A total of 54 mutations in different genomic regions was found.

Nile tilapia is predominantly produced in smallholder ponds without aeration. We hypothesize that Nile tilapia with high oxygen uptake efficiency (OUE) may perform better under these conditions than Nile tilapia with low OUE. Critical swimming speed (U, in cm s) is a potential indicator for OUE.

Purpose: The success of Descemet stripping only (DSO) is optimized by performing a well-centered, accurately sized diameter of descemetorhexis with a smooth curvilinear border. To achieve this success, we describe a repeatable and relatively straightforward technique to optimize this descemetorhexis for DSO.

Methods: The "two-flaps" technique uses the Gorovoy DSO forceps.

Development and Validation of a Burkholderia pseudomallei Core Genome Multilocus Sequence Typing Scheme To Facilitate Molecular Surveillance.

Burkholderia pseudomallei causes the severe disease melioidosis. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS)-based typing methods currently offer the highest resolution for molecular investigations of this genetically diverse pathogen. Still, its routine application in diagnostic laboratories is limited by the need for high computing power, bioinformatic skills, and variable bioinformatic approaches, with the latter affecting the results.

Aims: In RCT of adults with decompensated cirrhosis, GCSF mobilizes hematopoietic stem cells HSC and improves short-term outcome. An FDA-IND for sequential Kasai-GCSF treatment in biliary atresia BA was approved. This phase 1 study examines GCSF safety in Kasai subjects.

Nucleic acid amplification-based microfluidic approaches for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Because of the global spread of antimicrobials, there is an urgent need to develop rapid and effective tools for antimicrobial susceptibility testing to help clinicians prescribe accurate and appropriate antibiotic doses sooner. The conventional methods for antimicrobial susceptibility testing are usually based on bacterial culture methods, which are time-consuming, complicated, and labor-intensive. Therefore, other approaches are needed to address these issues.
