Surface electromyography (sEMG) can be used to measure the electrical activity of the respiratory muscles. The possible applications of sEMG span from patients suffering from acute respiratory failure to patients receiving chronic home mechanical ventilation, to evaluate muscle function, titrate ventilatory support and guide treatment. However, sEMG is mainly used as a monitoring tool for research and its use in clinical practice is still limited-in part due to a lack of standardization and transparent reporting.

  • Immunosuppression significantly increases the severity and treatment challenges of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in patients taking drugs like anti-TNF and methotrexate.
  • Research on BALB/c mice showed that these treatments hindered the immune response, preventing effective elimination of the parasites from the body.
  • The study concluded that immunosuppressed mice lacked an adequate cellular immune response to the parasite, which may help explain the higher relapse rates in affected human patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of bovine mastitis, posing significant challenges in control due to its complex ability to persist in the mammary gland and cause health issues and economic losses.
  • Researchers evaluated Galleria mellonella larvae as a model for studying the virulence of various S. aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitis and found that this model effectively highlighted differences in pathogenicity among the strains.
  • The study determined that certain S. aureus strains (16S-717, 19C-828, and 31S-1443) exhibited high virulence, making G. mellonella a promising, cost-effective model for further research aimed at developing strategies to control bovine mastitis.

Enterohemorrhagic (EHEC) remains an important cause of diarrheal disease and complications worldwide, especially in children, yet there are no available vaccines for human use. Inadequate pre-clinical evaluation due to inconsistent animal models remains a major barrier to novel vaccine development. We demonstrate the usefulness of Stx2d-producing in assessing vaccine effectiveness because it more closely recapitulates human disease caused by EHEC.
