In the prediction of sedimentation profiles in analytical ultracentrifugation, the counterflow due to diffusion must be taken into account for a proper analysis of experimental data in the determination of molecular properties. This is usually achieved by numerical solution of the Lamm equation. This paper presents an alternative approach, in which the displacement of the solute in the cell, resulting from the opposite effects of ultracentrifugal force and diffusional drift, is described by Brownian dynamics simulation of the solute particles.

BST-2 controls T cell proliferation and exhaustion by shaping the early distribution of a persistent viral infection.

The interferon inducible protein, BST-2 (or, tetherin), plays an important role in the innate antiviral defense system by inhibiting the release of many enveloped viruses. Consequently, viruses have evolved strategies to counteract the anti-viral activity of this protein. While the mechanisms by which BST-2 prevents viral dissemination have been defined, less is known about how this protein shapes the early viral distribution and immunological defense against pathogens during the establishment of persistence.

Mercury concentrations in seafood and the associated risk in women with high fish consumption from coastal villages of Sonora, Mexico.

Mercury concentrations in the ocean have increased considerably since the industrial revolution and will continue to increase in the next 50 years. Therefore, it is important to monitor Hg levels in fish and to evaluate the health risks in populations with high fish consumption. In the present study, a total of 238 samples of commercial fish and shellfish, were analyzed from the Central Gulf of California, Mexico.

Fine metagenomic profile of the Mediterranean stratified and mixed water columns revealed by assembly and recruitment.

Background: The photic zone of aquatic habitats is subjected to strong physicochemical gradients. To analyze the fine-scale variations in the marine microbiome, we collected seven samples from a single offshore location in the Mediterranean at 15 m depth intervals during a period of strong stratification, as well as two more samples during the winter when the photic water column was mixed. We were able to recover 94 new metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from these metagenomes and examine the distribution of key marine microbes within the photic zone using metagenomic recruitment.

Jaguar movement database: a GPS-based movement dataset of an apex predator in the Neotropics.

The field of movement ecology has rapidly grown during the last decade, with important advancements in tracking devices and analytical tools that have provided unprecedented insights into where, when, and why species move across a landscape. Although there has been an increasing emphasis on making animal movement data publicly available, there has also been a conspicuous dearth in the availability of such data on large carnivores. Globally, large predators are of conservation concern.

Background: The GESIDA/National AIDS Plan expert panel recommended preferred regimens (PR), alternative regimens (AR) and other regimens (OR) for antiretroviral treatment (ART) as initial therapy in HIV-infected patients for 2018. The objective of this study was to evaluate the costs and the efficiency of initiating treatment with PR and AR.

Research related to the fit evaluation at the item level involving cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) has been scarce. According to the parsimony principle, balancing goodness of fit against model complexity is necessary. General CDMs require a larger sample size to be estimated reliably, and can lead to worse attribute classification accuracy than the appropriate reduced models when the sample size is small and the item quality is poor, which is typically the case in many empirical applications.

A Cognitive Diagnosis Model for Identifying Coexisting Skills and Misconceptions.

At present, most existing cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are designed to either identify the presence and absence of skills or misconceptions, but not both. This article proposes a CDM that can be used to simultaneously identify what skills and misconceptions students possess. In addition, it proposes the use of the expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the model parameters.

Time Transfer by Laser Link (T2L2) in Noncommon View Between Europe and China.

The Time Transfer by Laser Link (T2L2) project allows for the synchronization of remote ultrastable clocks over intercontinental distances. The principle is derived from the satellite laser ranging technology with a dedicated space equipment designed to record arrival times of laser pulses at the satellite. The space segment was launched in 2008 as a passenger instrument on the ocean altimetry satellite Jason 2.

Reconstruction of Knee Defects Using Pedicled Gastrocnemius Muscle Flap with Split-Thickness Skin Grafting: A Single Surgeon's Experience with 21 Patients.

Generally, reconstruction of knee defects with exposed bone, joint, tendon, and/or hardware requires a vascularized muscle flap for coverage. Although there are several surgical options for a knee defect reconstruction, the pedicled gastrocnemius muscle still remains the workhorse flap. Although this flap is commonly used for knee defect reconstruction and the technique is described very well, there is an absence of information in the literature detailing the technique of harvesting and insetting of the gastrocnemius flap step by step with illustrations.

Taxonomy of the family Arenaviridae and the order Bunyavirales: update 2018.

In 2018, the family Arenaviridae was expanded by inclusion of 1 new genus and 5 novel species. At the same time, the recently established order Bunyavirales was expanded by 3 species. This article presents the updated taxonomy of the family Arenaviridae and the order Bunyavirales as now accepted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and summarizes additional taxonomic proposals that may affect the order in the near future.

Lumbar Gout Tophus Mimicking Epidural Abscess with Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Bone, and Gallium Scans.

Gout is a common metabolic disorder, typically diagnosed in peripheral joints. Tophaceous deposits in lumbar spine are a very rare condition with very few cases reported in literature. The following is a case report of a 52-year-old patient with low back pain, left leg pain, and numbness.

Mismatch in Brain Perfusion and Metabolism Detected with Tc-Hexamethyl Propylene Amine Oxime Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography and F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography in Moyamoya Disease.

We report a 47-year-old woman who developed an ischemic stroke with diplopia and dysarthria. Emergency computed tomography (CT) showed no pathological findings, and magnetic resonance (MR) showed mild ischemic-degenerative lesions. MR angiography and angiogram showed severe stenosis of both internal carotid and main intracranial arteries with plenty collateral vessels with "puff of smoke" suggesting a moyamoya disease (MMD).

The Vascular Hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease: A Key to Preclinical Prediction of Dementia Using Neuroimaging.

The vascular hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease (VHAD) was proposed 24 years ago from observations made in our laboratory using aging rats subjected to chronic brain hypoperfusion. In recent years, VHAD has become a mother-lode to numerous neuroimaging studies targeting cerebral hemodynamic changes, particularly brain hypoperfusion in elderly patients at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is a growing consensus among neuroradiologists that brain hypoperfusion is likely involved in the pathogenesis of AD and that disturbed cerebral blood flow (CBF) can serve as a key biomarker for predicting conversion of mild cognitive impairment to AD.

Mammarenaviruses cause chronic infections in their natural rodent hosts. Infected rodents shed infectious virus into excreta. Humans are infected through mucosal exposure to aerosols or direct contact of abraded skin with fomites, resulting in a wide range of manifestations from asymptomatic or mild febrile illness to severe life-threatening hemorrhagic fever.

Safety and Efficacy of Dolutegravir Plus Rilpivirine in Treatment-Experienced HIV-Infected Patients: The DORIVIR Study.

Objectives: To analyze the efficacy and safety of dolutegravir/rilpivirine (DTG/RPV) in HIV-infected patients who switched from any other antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Methods: Open-label, multicenter study including patients who switched to DTG/RPV between February 2015 and February 2016. Efficacy (HIV RNA <50 copies/mL), adverse events, and metabolic changes at 24 weeks were analyzed.

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is the gatekeeper for nuclear transport in eukaryotic cells. A key component of the NPC is the central shaft lined with intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) known as FG-Nups, which control the selective molecular traffic. Here, we present an approach to realize artificial NPC mimics that allows controlling the type and copy number of FG-Nups.

Marine reserves are implemented to achieve a variety of objectives, but are seldom rigorously evaluated to determine whether those objectives are met. In the rare cases when evaluations do take place, they typically focus on ecological indicators and ignore other relevant objectives such as socioeconomics and governance. And regardless of the objectives, the diversity of locations, monitoring protocols, and analysis approaches hinder the ability to compare results across case studies.
