The authors investigated the influence of additional weight in the reaching behavior of preterm infants. Nine low-risk preterm and 10 full-term infants age 5-7 months participated. A toy was presented in two procedures: (a) baseline and (b) additional weight (bracelet with weight of 20% of the infant's upper limb mass).

It was in 1846 that one of mankind's greatest fears, the pain of surgery, was eliminated. This historical review article describes how the various elements of anesthesiology (gasses, laryngoscopes, endotracheal tubes, intravenous medications, masks, and delivery systems) were discovered and how some brilliant entrepreneurs and physicians of the past two centuries have delivered them to humanity.

Epidemiologic behavior of obesity in the Maracaibo City metabolic syndrome prevalence study.

Introduction: Obesity is a worldwide public health issue. Since the epidemiological behaviour of this disease is not well established in our country, the purpose of this study was to determinate its prevalence in the Maracaibo City, Zulia State- Venezuela.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken using the data set from the Maracaibo City Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence Study.

Cigarette smoke dissociates inflammation and lung remodeling in OVA-sensitized and challenged mice.

We evaluated the effects of cigarette smoke (CS) on lung inflammation and remodeling in a model of ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized and OVA-challenged mice. Male BALB/c mice were divided into 4 groups: non-sensitized and air-exposed (control); non-sensitized and exposed to cigarette smoke (CS), sensitized and air-exposed (OVA) (50 μg+OVA 1% 3 times/week for 3 weeks) and sensitized and cigarette smoke exposed mice (OVA+CS). IgE levels were not affected by CS exposure.

Strangeness enhancement in Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisions at √S(NN)=200 GeV.

We report new STAR measurements of midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0), Ξ(-), Ξ[over ¯](+), Ω(-), Ω[over ¯](+) particles in Cu+Cu collisions at √S(NN)==200  GeV, and midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0) particles in Au+Au at √S(NN)==200  GeV. We show that, at a given number of participating nucleons, the production of strange hadrons is higher in Cu+Cu collisions than in Au+Au collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. We find that aspects of the enhancement factors for all particles can be described by a parametrization based on the fraction of participants that undergo multiple collisions.

High frequency of asymptomatic Leishmania spp. infection among HIV-infected patients living in endemic areas for visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

This study aims at estimating the prevalence of Leishmania infection among HIV-infected patients through the use of non-invasive tests. Anti-inflammatory effects of aerobic exercise in mice exposed to air pollution.

Purpose: Exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) results in lung inflammation. Regular aerobic exercise improves the inflammatory status in different pulmonary diseases. However, the effects of long-term aerobic exercise on the pulmonary response to DEP have not been investigated.

Statistics, the science of numerical evaluation, can thoroughly help to determine the real value of surgical treatment. In this work, we study the statistical tests and principles needed to demonstrate their role in surgical research.

Short-term effects of air pollution from biomass burning in mucociliary clearance of Brazilian sugarcane cutters.

Nasal mucociliary system is the first line of defense of the upper airways and may be affected acutely by exposure to particulate matter (PM) from biomass burning. Several epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a consistent association between levels of air pollution from biomass burning with increases in hospitalization for respiratory diseases and mortality. To determine the acute effects of exposure to particulate matter from biomass burning in nasal mucociliary transport by saccharin transit time (STT) test, we studied thirty-three non-smokers and twelve light smokers sugarcane cutters in two periods: pre-harvest season and 4 h after harvest at the first day after biomass burning.

Prevalence of virulence genes in Escherichia coli strains isolated from piglets in the suckling and weaning period in Mexico.

Faecal Escherichia coli isolates from suckling (n = 503) and weaning (n = 450) piglets with and without diarrhoea from 10 farms in Mexico were examined for identification and prevalence of virulence genes. E. coli isolates were tested further for enterotoxin (LT, STa, STb, Stx1, Stx2 and EAST1), fimbrial (F4, F5, F6, F17, F18 and F41) and eae adhesin genes by multiplex PCR.

Aerobic exercise attenuates pulmonary injury induced by exposure to cigarette smoke.

It has recently been suggested that regular exercise reduces lung function decline and risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among active smokers; however, the mechanisms involved in this effect remain poorly understood. Tumor necrosis factor-α in liver ischemia/reperfusion injury.

The pathophysiology of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) includes a number of complex and diverse mechanisms involving interactions between hepatocytes, Kupffer cells, neutrophils, macrophages, sinusoidal endothelial cells, and platelets. Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α), a cytokine produced by numerous cell types in response to inflammatory stimuli, is a well-known mediator during ischemia/reperfusion (IR) that plays a central role in injury to hepatocytes. TNF-α has a multifactorial effect in hepatic IRI because of the many interactions between TNF-α and reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, adhesion molecules, and various cytokines and chemokines.

Reversibility of impaired nasal mucociliary clearance in smokers following a smoking cessation programme.

Background And Objective: Smoking cessation (SC) is recognized as reducing tobacco-associated mortality and morbidity. The effect of SC on nasal mucociliary clearance (MC) in smokers was evaluated during a 180-day period.

Methods: Thirty-three current smokers enrolled in a SC intervention programme were evaluated after they had stopped smoking.

The phytosanitary importance of the corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis (De Long and Wolcott) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) and the planthopper, Delphacodes kuscheli Fennah (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) lies in their ability to transmit phloem-associated plant pathogens, mainly viruses and mollicutes, and to cause considerable mechanical damage to corn plants during feeding and oviposition. Fungi, particularly some members of the Ascomycota, are likely candidates for biocontrol agents against these insect pests, but several studies revealed their failure to invade the insect cuticle possibly because of the presence of inhibitory compounds such as phenols, quinones, and lipids and also by the antibiosis effect of the microbiota living on the cuticular surface of the host. Human accidents involving Rhinocricus spp., a common millipede genus observed in urban areas of Brazil.

Objective: The most important millipede species causing accidents in Brazil is Rhinocricus padbergi (order Spirobolida, family Rhinocricidae), a vegetarian scavenger distributed from Central to South America. Eleven clinical cases of dermal and oral accidental exposures to secretions from Rhinocricus spp. milipedes are described.

Improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms after conversion from mycophenolate mofetil to enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium in liver transplant patients.

As many as 50% of liver transplant patients suffer gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances post-transplant. Conversion from mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) to mycophenolate sodium (EC-MPS) alleviates GI symptom burden in renal transplant recipients. We employed a validated patient and physician-reported assessment to evaluate the impact of conversion to EC-MPS in liver transplant patients.

Salbutamol improves markers of epithelial function in mice with chronic allergic pulmonary inflammation.

We investigated the effects of salbutamol on the markers of epithelial function in a murine model of chronic allergic pulmonary inflammation by recording the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and the transepithelial potential difference (PD) in vivo. Mice were sensitized and received four challenges of ovalbumin (OVA group) or 0.9% saline (control group).

Risk classification in an emergency room: agreement level between a Brazilian institutional and the Manchester Protocol.

The aim of this study was to assess the level of agreement between an institutional protocol and the Manchester protocol for the risk assessment of patients attended in an emergency room of a public hospital in Belo Horizonte - MG - Brazil. This is a descriptive and comparative study, in which 382 patients' reports were evaluated and the risk was classified, using the institutional protocol and the Manchester protocol. Rates were calculated through weighted and unweighted kappa, in order to determine the level of agreement between the protocols.

Proximal and distal adjustments of reaching behavior in preterm infants.

The authors aimed to investigate proximal and distal adjustments of reaching behavior and grasping in 5-, 6-, and 7-month-old preterm infants. Nine low-risk preterm and 10 full-term infants participated. Both groups showed the predominance of unimanual reaching, an age-related increase in the frequency of vertical-oriented and open hand movement, and also an increase in successful grasping from 6 to 7 months.

Airway epithelium mediates the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise on asthma.
