Detecting Rising Wildfire Risks for South East England.

In July 2022 southeast England experienced a record breaking heatwave and unprecedented wildfires in urban areas. We investigate fire weather trends since 1960 in southeast England using a large ensemble of initialised climate models. Record smashing temperatures coincided with widespread fires in London, and we find that while wildfire risk was high, it was not record breaking.

Identifying Quality Improvement Targets After Pediatric Gastrostomy Tube Insertion: A NSQIP-Pediatric Pilot Study.

Background: Gastrostomy tube (GT) placement is one of the most common procedures performed by pediatric surgeons; however, no current national clinical data registry exists to assess GT-specific care processes and morbidity. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric (NSQIPPed) GT Pilot was created to provide participants with these data. This study aims to analyze these data to identify variability in perioperative practices and post-operative morbidity in pediatric GT operations and to provide targets for future quality improvement (QI) interventions.

Gender Differences in Clinical Performance Assessment of Internal Medicine Residents: A Longitudinal Analysis of the Influence of Faculty and Trainee Gender.

Purpose: Competency-based medical education relies on equitable assessment. This study examined the influence of faculty and trainee gender on assessments of internal medicine (IM) resident performance over time.

The initial spread of peaches across eastern North America was structured by Indigenous communities and ecologies.

We conduct a synthetic archaeological and ethnohistoric dating program to assess the timing and tempo of the spread of peaches, the first Eurasian domesticate to be adopted across Indigenous eastern North America, into the interior American Southeast by Indigenous communities who quickly "Indigenized" the fruit. In doing so, we present what may be the earliest absolute dates for archaeological contexts containing preserved peach pits in what is today the United States in the early to mid-16 century. Along with our broader chronological modeling, these early dates suggest that peaches were likely in the interior prior to permanent Spanish settlement in the American Southeast and that peaches spread independently of interactions with Spanish colonizers.

Objective: Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods are crucial for monitoring populations, particularly rare and cryptic species. For confident eDNA application, rigorous assay validation is required including specificity testing with genomic DNA (gDNA). Medical Distrust Among Kidney Transplant Candidates.

Background: Medical distrust may hinder kidney transplantation (KT) access. Among KT candidates evaluated for waitlisting, we identified factors associated with high distrust levels and quantified their association with waitlisting.

Applications of Mobile Health Technologies to Address Cardiometabolic Health Disparities in the United States: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Black and Hispanic adults are disproportionately burdened by cardiometabolic disorders. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of mobile health technologies to promote disease prevention and self-management among US adults in diverse communities.

Methods: Potential studies were identified using a comprehensive search of the PubMed and EMBASE databases for recent studies published from December 2018 through 2021.

Heatwave attribution based on reliable operational weather forecasts.

The 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave was so extreme as to challenge conventional statistical and climate-model-based approaches to extreme weather attribution. However, state-of-the-art operational weather prediction systems are demonstrably able to simulate the detailed physics of the heatwave. Here, we leverage these systems to show that human influence on the climate made this event at least 8 [2-50] times more likely.

Differences in Racial and Ethnic Disparities Between First and Repeat Kidney Transplantation.

Background: Recent data suggest patients with graft failure had better access to repeat kidney transplantation (re-KT) than transplant-naive dialysis accessing first KT. This was postulated to be because of better familiarity with the transplant process and healthcare system; whether this advantage is equitably distributed is not known. We compared the magnitude of racial/ethnic disparities in access to re-KT versus first KT.

Introducing 'Ngaruroro', a New Model for Understanding Māori Wellbeing.

Indigenous peoples around the world are revitalising their ancestral beliefs, practices, and languages, including traditional understandings of health and wellbeing. In the Aotearoa (New Zealand) context, a number of ground-breaking Māori health- and wellbeing-related models have emerged, each with their own scope and applications. We sought in our qualitative studies to explore and identify several key sources of wellbeing for Māori individuals.

Ewing Sarcoma Related protein 1 recognizes R-loops by binding DNA forks.

EWSR1 (Ewing Sarcoma Related protein 1) is an RNA binding protein that is ubiquitously expressed across cell lines and involved in multiple parts of RNA processing, such as transcription, splicing, and mRNA transport. EWSR1 has also been implicated in cellular mechanisms to control formation of R-loops, a three-stranded nucleic acid structure consisting of a DNA:RNA hybrid and a displaced single-stranded DNA strand. Unscheduled R-loops result in genomic and transcription stress.

Associations of geographic-based socioeconomic factors and HPV vaccination among male and female children in five US states.

Background: We assessed whether five geographic-based socioeconomic factors (medically underserved area (MUA); healthcare provider shortage area (HPSA); persistent poverty; persistent child poverty; and social vulnerability index (SVI)) were associated with the odds of HPV vaccination initiation, series completion, and parental vaccine hesitancy, and whether the observed relationships varied by gender of the child.

Methods: An online panel service, administered through Qualtrics®, was used to recruit parents of adolescents 9-17 years of age to complete a one-time survey in 2021. Coverage of the panel included five US states: Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Southern Illinois.

Modeling the potential impact of storm surge and sea level rise on coastal archaeological heritage: A case study from Georgia.

Climate change poses great risks to archaeological heritage, especially in coastal regions. Preparing to mitigate these challenges requires detailed and accurate assessments of how coastal heritage sites will be impacted by sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge, driven by increasingly severe storms in a warmer climate. However, inconsistency between modeled impacts of coastal erosion on archaeological sites and observed effects has thus far hindered our ability to accurately assess the vulnerability of sites.
