Strong, affiliative bonds often function to facilitate social competition through cooperative defence of resources, but the benefits of social bonds may be low when direct competition is less intense or less beneficial. In such cases, one possible outcome is that relationships are weak and undifferentiated. Alternatively, negotiating stable, selectively tolerant relationships may be a strategy to mitigate the costs and risks of sharing space when direct competition is undesirable.

Methods: A Statewide Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database was linked to Medicare claims data to identify 8,887 beneficiaries undergoing CABG and AVR (surgical or transcatheter) between 2017 and 2021. The primary outcome was the incidence of 180-day infection.
The photophysical properties of six new luminescent tetrahedral Zn(II) complexes are presented that survey two electronic donor moieties (phenolate and carbazolate) and three electronic acceptors (pyridine, pyrimidine, and pyrazine). A unique ligand based on an -terphenyl motif forms an eight-membered chelate, which enhances through-space charge-transfer (CT) interactions by limiting through-bond conjugation between the donor and acceptor. A single isomeric product was obtained in yields up to 90%.

The virus has been detected in various animals including cats and dogs making it a major public health concern and a One Health issue. In this study, conjunctival and pharyngeal swabs (n = 350) and serum samples (n = 350) were collected between July and December 2020 from cats that were housed in an animal shelter and tested for the infection of SARS-CoV-2 using real time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) that targeted the N1 and N2 genes, and a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus neutralization Test (sVNT), respectively.

Objective: This study sought to: (1) evaluate hospital-level variation in infections following cardiac surgery and (2) develop and evaluate a 180-day infection quality metric.
Methods: This study evaluated Medicare claims that were merged with institutional Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database files among patients undergoing cardiac surgery across 33 Michigan centers. The primary outcome was an infection within 180 days of surgery.
Purpose: Studies of healthcare encounters leading to cancer diagnosis have increased over recent years. While some studies examine healthcare utilization before the cancer registry date of diagnosis, relevant pre-diagnosis interactions are not always immediately prior to this date due to date abstraction guidelines. We evaluated agreement of a registry date with a claims-based index and examined Emergency Department (ED) involvement in cancer diagnosis as an example of possible pre-diagnostic healthcare misclassification that could arise from improper date choice.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed in one health system assessing awareness of and barriers to accessing MHR.
Purpose: Our purpose was to evaluate the characteristics of highly and poorly rated teachers as well as to assess the validity and reliability of those evaluations.
Methods: We downloaded 14 years of medicine faculty evaluations completed by 3rd and 4 year medical students. We dichotomized overall teaching effectiveness as outstanding (receiving "outstanding") or inferior (rated as a "unsatisfactory," "marginal," or "acceptable").
Ovarian cancer (OC) must be detected in its early stages when the mortality rate is the lowest to provide patients with the best chance of survival. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a critical OC biomarker since its levels are elevated across all stages and increase with disease progression. This paper presents an LPA assay based on a thickness shear mode acoustic sensor with dissipation monitoring that involves a new thiol molecule 3-(2-mercaptoethanoxy)propanoic acid (HS-MEG-COOH).

Emissions from 7 different cooking oils were investigated during the frying of wheat flatbread (puri). These emissions were dominated by ethanol, octane, nonane and a variety of aldehydes, including acetaldehyde, heptenal and hexanal, and the average concentration of acetaldehyde (0.

We present a series of three articles on the genetics and pharmacogenetics of G protein- coupled receptors (GPCR). In the first article, we discuss genetic variants of the G protein subunits and accessory proteins that are associated with human phenotypes; in the second article, we build upon this to discuss "G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) gene variants and human genetic disease" and in the third article, we survey "G protein-coupled receptor pharmacogenomics". In the present article, we review the processes of ligand binding, GPCR activation, inactivation, and receptor trafficking to the membrane in the context of human genetic disease resulting from pathogenic variants of accessory proteins and G proteins.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the treating hospital influences CR enrollment nationally.
Methods: We included Fee-for-Service Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥66 years who were hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass grafting, percutaneous coronary intervention, or heart valve repair/replacement.
Antiviral signaling downstream of RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) proceeds through a multi-protein complex organized around the adaptor protein mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS). Protein complex function can be modulated by RNA molecules that provide allosteric regulation or act as molecular guides or scaffolds. We hypothesized that RNA plays a role in organizing MAVS signaling platforms.

Oncology clinicians should encourage all patients to quit and offer resources to help them do so, following the 5As framework (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange follow-up).
Method: This study tests gender differences in self-reported receipt of the 5As by an oncology provider among 306 recently-diagnosed male and female cancer patients.
Purpose: Diabetic eye disease, namely diabetic retinopathy (DR), remains a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Research has shown that treatment for diabetes and eye care was disrupted during the pandemic - with disparities between urban and rural populations being unknown. Thus, we aimed to assess the prevalence of reported rates of DR and dilated fundus exams from 2017 to 2021.

EndMT has been implicated in the development of pulmonary vascular remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a fatal and progressive lung vascular disease. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β ), an inflammatory cytokine, is known to induce EndMT in many types of endothelial cells including lung vascular endothelial cells (LVEC).
