One inevitable consequence of aging is the gradual deterioration of physical function and exercise capacity, driven in part by the adverse effect of age on muscle tissue. We hypothesized that relationships exist between age-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in skeletal muscle and age-associated declines in physical function and exercise capacity. Previously, male C57BL/6mice (6m, months old, 24m, and 28m) were tested for physical function using a composite scoring system (comprehensive functional assessment battery, CFAB) comprised of five well-validated tests of physical function.

A Cell Atlas of Thoracic Aortic Perivascular Adipose Tissue: a focus on mechanotransducers.

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) is increasingly recognized for its function in mechanotransduction. To examine the cell-specificity of recognized mechanotransducers we used single nuclei RNA sequencing (snRNAseq) of the thoracic aorta PVAT (taPVAT) from male Dahl SS rats compared to subscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT). Approximately 30,000 nuclei from taPVAT and BAT each were characterized by snRNAseq, identifying 8 major cell types expected and one unexpected (nuclei with oligodendrocyte marker genes).

Because this requires experience with programming or separate data processing tools, data transformation remains a barrier in visualization authoring. To address this challenge, we present a new visualization paradigm, concept binding, that separates high-level visualization intents and low-level data transformation steps, leveraging an AI agent.

Background: Healthcare providers often encounter clinical trial results in the form of visual data displays. Although there is a robust literature on patient responses to data displays in medical settings, less is known about how providers comprehend and apply this information. Our study provides a scoping review of the literature on providers' reactions to and perceptions of data displays.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography in addition to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and biopsies to select prostate cancer patients for focal therapy.

Objective: To evaluate the additional value of prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET) to conventional diagnostic tools to select patients for hemi-ablative focal therapy (FT).

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis on a multicentre cohort (private and institutional) of 138 patients who underwent multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI), PSMA-PET, and systematic biopsies prior to radical prostatectomy between January 2011 and July 2021. Patients were eligible when they met the consensus criteria for FT: PSA <15 ng/mL, clinical/radiological T stage ≤T2b, and International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade 2-3.

Mycorrhizal feedbacks influence global forest structure and diversity.

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species.

Electronic structure in a transition metal dipnictide TaAs.

The family of transition-metal dipnictides has been of theoretical and experimental interest because this family hosts topological states and extremely large magnetoresistance (MR). Recently,TaAs2, a member of this family, has been predicted to support a topological crystalline insulating state. Here, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal both closed and open pockets in the metallic Fermi surface (FS) and linearly dispersive bands on the (2‾01) surface, along with the presence of extreme MR observed from magneto-transport measurements.

Insights on volatile metals in landfill gas as determined from advanced treatment media.

This study analyzed spent activated carbon (AC) from a landfill gas (LFG) treatment system for an expanded suite of lesser studied volatile metals, revealing elevated levels of As and Sb in the LFG, exceeding those previously reported, with minimum average concentrations of 640 µg m and 590 µg m, respectively. The annual release of As and Sb through landfill gas was found to be significant, surpassing leachate emissions by an order of magnitude. Extrapolating these findings to all US landfills suggests that the release of As and Sb through landfill gas could be a major, previously overlooked source of these metals in global emission estimates, underscoring the need to include them when developing future inventories.

Thalidomide has a dark history as a teratogen, but in recent years, its derivates have been shown to function as potent chemotherapeutic agents. These drugs bind cereblon (CRBN), the substrate receptor of an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, and modify its degradation targets. Despite these insights, remarkably little is known about the normal function of cereblon in development.

The Relationship Between Apathy and Cognitive Impairment Among Hispanic/Latin Americans: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Systematic Review.

Objectives: The primary aim was to evaluate apathy assessment measures in relation to cognitive impairment among Hispanic/Latin Americans.

Methods: A systematic review on the relationship between apathy and cognitive impairment among Hispanic/Latin Americans across normal aging and neurocognitive disorders was conducted according to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and using APA PsycInfo, Embase, and PubMed databases. Inclusion criteria required (1) a sample of English or Spanish-speaking adults ages 18 years and older, (2) with measures of apathy, (3) assessment of cognitive functioning or diagnosis of neurocognitive disorder, (4) with at least 18.

Cluster randomized controlled trial analysis at the cluster level: The clan command.

In this article, we introduce a new command, clan, that conducts a cluster-level analysis of cluster randomized trials. The command simplifies adjusting for individual- and cluster-level covariates and can also account for a stratified design. It can be used to analyze a continuous, binary, or rate outcome.

However, researchers sometimes want to understand the relationship between transcriptomic variation and health outcomes like survival. Therefore, we suggest the use of Survival-based Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (SGSEA) to help determine biological functions associated with a disease's survival.

The digestion of protein into peptide fragments reduces the size and complexity of protein molecules. Peptide fragments can be analyzed with higher sensitivity (often > 10 fold) and resolution using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, leading to improved pattern recognition by common machine learning algorithms. In turn, enhanced sensitivity and specificity for bacterial sorting and/or disease diagnosis may be obtained.

The purpose of this study was to determine how surgical castration in the male porcine model influences ACL size and function across skeletal growth.

Background: Clinicians and researchers often assume that symptom burden is associated with self-care management (SCM) in patients with heart failure (HF). However, that association is often not borne out in simple regression analyses and may be because another variable mediates the association. Fatalism is an appropriate candidate for mediation and is the belief that circumstances are predetermined without opportunity for control by individuals.
