Impact of parenteral nutrition on quality of life, the family and gastrointestinal symptoms in children with intestinal failure.

Objectives: Intestinal failure (IF) and dependency on parenteral nutrition (PN) are risk factors for lower health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children. Weaning from PN is a major goal of paediatric IF treatment, however, its impact on HRQOL remains unclear. This study aimed to assess HRQOL, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and family impact in children with IF in relation to their need for PN.

Symptoms and management of cow's milk allergy: perception and evidence.

Introduction: The diagnosis and management of cow's milk allergy (CMA) is a topic of debate and controversy. Our aim was to compare the opinions of expert groups from the Middle East ( = 14) and the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) ( = 13).

Methods: These Expert groups voted on statements that were developed by the ESPGHAN group and published in a recent position paper.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe the impact of allogeneic/haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation on nutritional status and intake in a group of children aged 2 to 18 years.

Methods: In an observational study, data were collected prospectively. Patients were prescribed individual nutritional support by hospital routines.

An ESPGHAN Position Paper on the Use of Low-FODMAP Diet in Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Excluding oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) from the diet is increasingly being used to treat children with gastrointestinal complaints. The aim of this position paper is to review the available evidence on the safety and efficacy of its use in children and provide expert guidance regarding practical aspects in case its use is considered . Members of the Gastroenterology Committee, the Nutrition Committee and the Allied Health Professionals Committee of the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition contributed to this position paper.

Drugs in Focus: Octreotide Use in Children With Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Octreotide, a somatostatin analogue, has been used for more than 20 years in children with gastrointestinal bleeding, chylothorax or chylous ascites, intestinal lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, intestinal dysmotility, and severe diarrhoea; however, until now, there is a lack of randomised clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of this compound in childhood. Hence, we aimed to review the literature in order to determine the evidence of its use and safety in children, using PubMed from 2000 to 2021 with the search terms "octreotide" and "children" and "bleeding or chylous ascites or chylothorax or acute pancreatitis or lymphangiectasia or diarrhoea or intestinal dysmotility".

An ESPGHAN Position Paper on the Use of Breath Testing in Paediatric Gastroenterology.

Objectives: Given a lack of a systematic approach to the use of breath testing in paediatric patients, the aim of this position paper is to provide expert guidance regarding the indications for its use and practical considerations to optimise its utility and safety.

Methods: Nine clinical questions regarding methodology, interpretation, and specific indications of breath testing and treatment of carbohydrate malabsorption were addressed by members of the Gastroenterology Committee (GIC) of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN).A systematic literature search was performed from 1983 to 2020 using PubMed, the MEDLINE and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Background: Coeliac disease is one of the most prevalent immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorders in children.

Aim: To review the incidence and prevalence of paediatric coeliac disease, and their trends, regionally across Europe, overall and according to age at diagnosis.

Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2019, based on PubMed, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library, searches of grey literature and websites and hand searching of reference lists.

Associations of age, body mass index and biochemical parameters with brain morphology in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Objective: Accumulating evidence shows that patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have globally reduced brain mass, including lower cortical volume and thickness, which largely normalizes following weight restoration. The underlying mechanisms for these processes are unknown, and how age and severity of emaciation are associated with brain morphology in AN is poorly understood. We investigated associations of age, body mass index (BMI) and biochemical parameters with brain morphology among patients in treatment.

Bone mineral density and vitamin D in paediatric intestinal failure patients receiving home parenteral nutrition.

Background & Aims: Patients with intestinal failure (IF) are dependent on long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) to ensure growth and development. The primary aim of the present study was to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and vitamin D status in paediatric IF patients on HPN and a group of healthy children aged 2-18 years. Secondary aims were to assess growth, body composition, nutrient provision and physical activity.

Safety of Thiopurine Use in Paediatric Gastrointestinal Disease.

Thiopurines, alone or in combination with other agents, have a pivotal role in the treatment of specific gastrointestinal and hepatological disorders. In inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune hepatitis thiopurines have proven their value as steroid sparing agents for the maintenance of remission and may be considered for preventing postoperative Crohn disease recurrence where there is moderate risk of this occurring. Their use with infliximab therapy reduces antibody formation and increases biologic drug levels.

A clinical study of canine collagen type III glomerulopathy.

Background: Collagen type III glomerulopathy (Col3GP), also known as collagenofibrotic glomerulonephropathy, is a rare renal disease with unknown pathogenesis that occurs in animals and humans. We recently described a naturally occurring canine autosomal recessive model of Col3GP, and the aim of the present work was to study the clinical features of canine Col3GP and compare with the human phenotype. In humans two different clinical syndromes with different age at onset (child- or adulthood) have been observed.

A canine autosomal recessive model of collagen type III glomerulopathy.

Collagen type III glomerulopathy (Col3GP) is a rare renal disease characterized by massive glomerular accumulations of collagen type III. The disease occurs in both humans and animals, and has been presumed to be heritable with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. The pathogenesis is unknown.

Loss of heterozygosity at the FLCN locus in early renal cystic lesions in dogs with renal cystadenocarcinoma and nodular dermatofibrosis.

Small, macroscopically visible cysts on the surface of the kidneys were observed in eight 6-8-week-old puppies diagnosed with renal cystadenocarcinoma and nodular dermatofibrosis (RCND). Histologic examination of the renal cortices in these puppies reveals numerous small cystic tubular changes. Hyperplastic change of the epithelial lining of cysts is frequently observed.

Artificial insemination in canids: a useful tool in breeding and conservation.

Artificial insemination (AI) and semen freezing have become services available to dog owners worldwide, and the demand for services to freeze semen is increasing. In other canids such as the fox, the fur industry utilizes fresh or frozen semen to artificially inseminate vixens to produce pelts. Clearly, AI facilitates the use of a male to sire several females by diluting the ejaculate, increases breeding hygiene, and allows crossing between species with slightly different breeding seasons.

Effects of long-term maternal exposure to low doses of PCB126 and PCB153 on the reproductive system and related hormones of young male goats.

In this study, female goats were orally exposed to PCB126 or PCB153, at 49 ng/kg body weight per day and 98 microg/kg body weight per day respectively, from gestational day 60 until delivery at approximately day 150. Exposure of the offspring continued via lactation until postnatal day 40. Reproductive toxicity in the male offspring was studied by the evaluation of conventional reproductive endpoints as well as flow cytometric analyses of spermatogenesis and sperm chromatin structure.
