IgA Vasculitis Followed by IgA Nephropathy Without an Identifiable Trigger: The Same Disease or a Spectrum of Related Conditions?

IgA vasculitis and IgA nephropathy are characterized by IgA deposition in blood vessels and glomerular mesangium, respectively. The former is far more common in the pediatric population, while the latter presents more often in adulthood. A consensus regarding whether these two conditions are manifestations of the same disease that occurs on a spectrum has not yet been reached, and, to our knowledge, no clinical trials to address this question have been conducted.

Feasibility of training primary healthcare workers to identify antenatal depression.

Identifying women with depressive symptoms is the first step to reducing the risk of the short-term and long-term consequences of antenatal depression. Task shifting by training primary healthcare workers may help to reduce the burden in low-resource settings. Twenty health workers in a primary healthcare center in urban Bengaluru were trained to screen and identify antenatal depression.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the agreement in EBF between maternal recall and the dose-to-mother (DTM) technique.

Methods: Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the study. A total of 207 and 118 mother-infant pairs were assessed at 3 and 6 months of child's age.

Methods: Sixty patients posted for foot surgeries under USG-guided sciatic nerve block were randomised into Group Single Point, receiving a single injection of 20 mL of 1.5% lignocaine with adrenaline just proximal to the sciatic nerve bifurcation, and Group Double Point, receiving two injections of 10 mL of 1.

The splicing factor SF3B1 is recurrently mutated in various tumors, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The impact of the hotspot mutation SF3B1 on the PDAC pathogenesis, however, remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that Sf3b1 alone is insufficient to induce malignant transformation of the murine pancreas, but that it increases aggressiveness of PDAC if it co-occurs with mutated KRAS and p53.

Effects of isoflurane and urethane anesthetics on glutamate neurotransmission in rat brain using in vivo amperometry.

Background: Aspects of glutamate neurotransmission implicated in normal and pathological conditions are predominantly evaluated using in vivo recording paradigms in rats anesthetized with isoflurane or urethane. Urethane and isoflurane anesthesia influence glutamate neurotransmission through different mechanisms; however, real-time outcome measures of potassium chloride (KCl)-evoked glutamate overflow and glutamate clearance kinetics have not been compared within and between regions of the brain. In order to maintain rigor and reproducibility within the literature between the two most common methods of anesthetized in vivo recording of glutamate, we compared glutamate signaling as a function of anesthesia and brain region in the rat strain most used in neuroscience.

Advanced age is the greatest risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death. Arterial function is impaired in advanced age which contributes to the development of CVD. One underexplored hypothesis is that DNA damage within arteries leads to this dysfunction, yet evidence demonstrating the incidence and physiological consequences of DNA damage in arteries, and in particular, in the microvasculature, in advanced age is limited.

A Case of Chronic Mesenteric Ischemia Due to Celiac and Mesenteric Artery Thrombosis.

CMI presents with non-specific symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose, and requires complex management involving interprofessional teams. The proteasome, a complex multi-catalytic protease machinery, orchestrates the protein degradation essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis, and its dysregulation also underlies many different types of diseases. Its function is regulated by many different mechanisms that encompass various factors such as proteasome activators (PAs), adaptor proteins, and post-translational modifications. This review highlights the unique characteristics of proteasomal regulation through the lens of a distinct family of regulators, the 11S, REGs, or PA26/PA28.

Meropenem-vaborbactam restoration of first-line drug efficacy and comparison of meropenem-vaborbactam-moxifloxacin versus BPaL MDR-TB regimen.

Background: Meropenem in combination with β-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs) and other drugs was tested to identify alternative treatment regimens for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

Methods: The following were performed: (1) MIC experiments; (2) static time-kill studies (STKs) with different BLIs; and (3) a hollow fibre model system of TB (HFS-TB) studies with meropenem-vaborbactam combined with human equivalent daily doses of 20 mg/kg or 35 mg/kg rifampin, or moxifloxacin 400 mg, or linezolid 600 mg vs. bedaquiline-pretonamid-linezolid (BPaL) for MDR-TB.

Objective: Approximately 3 million Americans served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War. Veterans have a higher incidence rate of lung cancer compared with the general population, which may be related to exposures sustained during service. Agent Orange, one of the tactical herbicides used by the armed forces as a means of destroying crops and clearing vegetation, has been linked to the development of several cancers including non-small cell lung cancer.

The objective of this study was to explore factors influencing parents' decisions about their children's foods, beverages, and activities.

Advanced practice nurse management in multiple myeloma treated with oral therapy.

Introduction: Therapeutic approaches in Multiple Myeloma (MM) have considerably changed over the last few years, with effective oral chemotherapy and continuous treatment. In this context, the objective of this study was to examine the circuitry of an advanced practitioner nurse (APN)-led intervention that provided supportive care for MM patients treated with oral chemotherapy.

Methods: This population-based study was conducted at the hematology department - Institut de Cancérologie Lucien Neuwirth (ICLN, Saint-Priest-en-Jarez), from April 2017 to September 2020.

Neighborhood gentrification, displacement, and severe maternal morbidity in California.

Gentrification, a racialized and profit-driven process in which historically disinvested neighborhoods experience an influx of development that contributes to the improvement of physical amenities, increasing housing costs, and the dispossession and displacement of existing communities, may influence the risk of severe maternal morbidity (SMM). Leveraging a racially diverse population-based sample of all live hospital births in California between 2006 and 2017, we examined associations between neighborhood-level gentrification and SMM. SMM was defined as having one of 21 procedures and diagnoses, as described in the SMM index developed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Association of free-living diet composition with plasma lipoprotein(a) levels in healthy adults.

Background: Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is an apoB100-containing lipoprotein with high levels being positively associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Lp(a) levels are genetically determined. However, previous studies report a negative association between Lp(a) and saturated fatty acid intake.

Carvacrol decreases blood-brain barrier permeability post-diffuse traumatic brain injury in rats.

Previously, we showed that Satureja Khuzestanica Jamzad essential oil (SKEO) and its major component, carvacrol (CAR), 5-isopropyl-2-methylphenol, has anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-edematous properties after experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats. CAR, predominantly found in Lamiaceae family (Satureja and Oregano), is lipophilic, allowing diffusion across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). These experiments test the hypothesis that acute treatment with CAR after TBI can attenuate oxidative stress and BBB permeability associated with CAR's anti-edematous traits.

Assessment of the Menstrual Problems among Teenage Girls: A Tertiary Care Center Study.

Introduction: Due to shame over discussing menstruation and fear of illness, many adolescent girls with monthly problems never visit their family doctor or gynecologist. The presentation can be delayed as a result. The current study's goal was to assess the sociodemographic characteristics of adolescent females experiencing menstruation issues and the nature of those problems, and how they were handled.

Background: Diagnosis and treatment management for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is guided by routine diagnostic head and neck computed tomography (CT) scans to identify tumor and lymph node features. The extracapsular extension (ECE) is a strong predictor of patients' survival outcomes with HNSCC. It is essential to detect the occurrence of ECE as it changes staging and treatment planning for patients.

High Incidence of Acute Kidney Injury Following Antibiotic-Loaded Spacer Insertion for Periprosthetic Joint Infection: An Updated Review of the Literature.

Background: The use of antibiotic-impregnated cement during 2-stage revision arthroplasty for periprosthetic joint infection poses a risk of renal complications following spacer insertion. This systematic review aimed to investigate the rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) following antibiotic-loaded spacer insertion and to identify risk factors associated with this complication.

Methods: A systematic review was performed using PubMed, Cochrane Central, and Scopus databases.

Prion diseases are transmissible, fatal neurologic diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and scrapie in sheep. Prions are extremely difficult to inactivate and established methods to reduce prion infectivity are often dangerous, caustic, expensive, or impractical. Identifying viable and safe methods for treating prion contaminated materials is important for hospitals, research facilities, biologists, hunters, and meat-processors.

Subjective cognitive complaints in White and African American older adults: associations with demographic, mood, cognitive, and neuroimaging features.

Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) in cognitively intact older adults have been investigated as a clinically important symptom that may portend the onset of a neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer's disease. Few studies have concurrently incorporated demographic features, depressive symptoms, neuropsychological status, and neuroimaging correlates of SCC and evaluated whether these differ in White and African American older adults. In the current study, 131 (77 White, 54 African American) healthy participants ≥50 years old completed the Cognitive Function Instrument (CFI) to assess SCC, and they underwent objective cognitive testing, assessment of mood, and brain magnetic resonance imaging.
