Treating cancer patients with deep venous thrombosis/venous thromboembolism (DVT/VTE) can be challenging as patients are frequently unable to receive the standard therapy of anticoagulation due to the increased risk of bleeding complications seen in this population. Similarly, the hesitation of interventionalists to use thrombolytic agents due to bleeding risks limits percutaneous intervention options as well. Further, outcome data and guidelines do not exist for oncologic patients and often treatment is tailored to patient-specific factors after multidisciplinary discussion.

In this paper, we describe a new approach to the continuous operation of a transverse spin-exchange optically pumped NMR gyroscope that utilizes modulation of both the applied bias field and the optical pumping. We demonstrate the simultaneous, continuous excitation of 131Xe and 129Xe using this hybrid modulation approach and the real-time demodulation of the Xe precession using a custom least-squares fitting algorithm. We present rotation rate measurements with this device, with a common field suppression factor of ∼1400, an angle random walk of 21 μHz/Hz, and a bias instability of ∼480 nHz after ∼1000 s.

In this work, we look to compare three methods of feedback for the ultimate purpose of measuring the transverse vector components of a magnetic field using a synchronous light-pulse atomic scalar magnetometer with a few tens of fT/Hz sensitivity in Earth-field-scale magnetic environments. By applying modulation in the magnetic field to orthogonal axes, the respective vector components may, in principle, be separated from the scalar measurement. Success of this technique depends in significant part on the ability to measure and respond to these perturbations with low measurement uncertainty.

In this work we demonstrate a high sensitivity atomic gradiometer capable of operation in earth-field level environments. We apply a light-pulse sequence at four times the Larmor frequency to achieve gradiometer sensitivity <20 fT/cm/H at the finite field strength of 22 µT. The experimental timing sequence can be tuned to the field magnitude of interest.

Atomic magnetometers (AMs) offer many advantages over superconducting quantum interference devices due to, among other things, having comparable sensitivity while not requiring cryogenics. One of the major limitations of AMs is the challenge of configuring them as gradiometers. We report the development of a spin-exchange relaxation free vector atomic magnetic gradiometer with a sensitivity of 3 fT cm Hz and common mode rejection ratio >150 in the band from DC to 100 Hz.

This article reviews the physics and technology of producing large quantities of highly spin-polarized He nuclei using spin-exchange (SEOP) and metastability-exchange (MEOP) optical pumping. Both technical developments and deeper understanding of the physical processes involved have led to substantial improvements in the capabilities of both methods. For SEOP, the use of spectrally narrowed lasers and K-Rb mixtures has substantially increased the achievable polarization and polarizing rate.

We demonstrate low-loss measurement of the hyperfine ground state of rubidium atoms by state dependent fluorescence detection in a dipole trap array of five sites. The presence of atoms and their internal states are minimally altered by utilizing circularly polarized probe light and a strictly controlled quantization axis. Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement is indicated for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with a contraindication to or a failure of anticoagulation. With the advent of retrievable IVC filters and their ease of placement, an increasing number of such filters are being inserted for prophylaxis in patients at high risk for VTE. Available data show that only a small number of these filters are retrieved within the recommended period, if at all, prompting the FDA to issue a statement on the need for their timely removal.
