Efficacy of 3-year psychiatric daycare treatment in patients with schizophrenia.

The present study investigated the efficacy of a 3-year psychiatric daycare (DC) program with regard to psychiatric symptoms and difficulties with daily living experienced by patients with schizophrenia. The subjects were 28 patients who met the diagnostic criteria from the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for schizophrenia and continued DC treatment for 3 years. The present study assessed participants at two points: at the start of DC and after 3 years, by evaluating socioeconomic factors and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores.

Characterization of the interaction between interleukin-13 and interleukin-13 receptors.

Interleukin-13 (IL-13) possesses two types of receptor: the heterodimer, composed of the IL-13Ralpha1 chain (IL-13Ralpha1) and the IL-4Ralpha chain (IL-4Ralpha), transducing the IL-13 signals; and the IL-13Ralpha2 chain (IL-13Ralpha2), acting as a nonsignaling "decoy" receptor. Extracellular portions of both IL-13Ralpha1 and IL-13Ralpha2 are composed of three fibronectin type III domains, D1, D2, and D3, of which the last two comprise the cytokine receptor homology modules (CRHs), a common structure of the class I cytokine receptor superfamily. Thus far, there has been no information about the critical amino acids of the CRHs or the role of the D1 domains of IL-13Ralpha1 and IL-13Ralpha2 in binding to IL-13.

Evaluation of microsatellite markers in association studies: a search for an immune-related susceptibility gene in sarcoidosis.

Association studies using linkage disequilibrium (LD) between candidate loci and nearby markers have been proposed to identify susceptibility genes for complex diseases. We analyzed polymorphisms of microsatellites (MSs) and LD patterns of the regions in which candidate genes related to the Th1 immune response have been annotated and attempted to identify a susceptibility gene for sarcoidosis in a marker-based association study. Nineteen MSs were identified in six Th1-related genes (IFNGR1, IFNGR2, IL12RB1, IL12RB2, STAT1 and STAT4) and then eight were further characterized as useful polymorphic markers.

The clonal expansion of human T lymphotropic virus type 1-infected T cells: a comparison between seroconverters and long-term carriers.

Background: The clonal expansion of human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-infected T cells is considered to be important for the maintenance of infection. However, the process by which the clonality of HTLV-1-infected T cells is established is not understood.

Methods: HTLV-1 clonality in 4 adult seroconverters was analyzed by inverse long polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by cloning of the PCR products and evaluation of restriction fragment-length polymorphism.

Promoter analysis and aberrant expression of the MUC5B gene in diffuse panbronchiolitis.

Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a chronic inflammatory airway disease predominantly affecting Asian populations. DPB is considered to be a complex genetic disease. Considering the mucous hypersecretion of the disease, we hypothesized that the transcriptional activity of mucin genes may be altered in DPB.

Crisis-induced intermittency in two coupled chaotic maps: towards understanding chaotic itinerancy.

The present paper considers crisis-induced intermittency in a system composed of two coupled logistic maps. Its purpose is to clarify a bifurcation scenario generating such intermittent behaviors that can be regarded as a simple example of chaotic itinerancy. The intermittent dynamics appears immediately after an attractor-merging crisis of two off-diagonal chaotic attractors in a symmetrically coupled system.

Evaluating community attitudes to people with schizophrenia and mental disorders using a case vignette method.

Utilizing the case vignette method, community attitudes about people with schizophrenia and mental disorders, and perceived causes of and images regarding schizophrenia were investigated. Participants comprised 1596 respondents living in the area covered by the K health center in N prefecture. The survey utilized the Mental Disorder Prejudice Scale, a case vignette, and other basic attributes.

Direct determination of MUC5B promoter haplotypes based on the method of single-strand conformation polymorphism and their statistical estimation.

Haplotype-based human genome research is important in identifying disease susceptibility genes efficiently. Although haplotype reconstruction by statistical methods is widely used, direct haplotype determination by molecular techniques has also been developed as a complementary method for statistical estimation. In this study, we demonstrate a molecular haplotyping method making use of single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) gels.

Expression of glucose transporter 5 by microglia in human gliomas.

Our previous studies indicate that glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5) is a microglial marker in routine paraffin sections, and is rarely present in monocytes/macrophages of the peripheral organs. We examined the expression of GLUT5 in 91 cases of human gliomas to characterize the microglial phenotype in glioma tissues. Immunohistochemistry was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections using such antibodies as a GLUT5 antibody, two markers for activated microglia: major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II Ag and macrophage scavenger receptor class A (MSR-A), and MIB-1 antibody.

Conditional entropy as an indicator of pleomorphism in astrocytic tumors.

The entropies of nuclear arrangements as an indicator of pleomorphism are assessed using a morphometric method. Sixty astrocytic tumors (grades I, II, III and IV; 15 cases each) were reviewed and analyzed. All slides were stained with HE and MIB-1 antibody.

Evaluating stigma against mental disorder and related factors.

This study attempted to identify forms of stigma against individuals with mental disorders and related factors. The subjects comprised 2632 people living in the area covered by the K health center in N prefecture. Factor analysis of the Mental Disorder Prejudice Scale (1211 valid responses) identified three factors: 'rejection', 'peculiarity' and 'human rights alienation'.

Attention-Affect Check List: A self-report measure of acute mental stress.

Given a hint from Lang, Bradley, and Cutbert's (1997) defense cascade, two cognitive processes, instead of passive versus active behavioral coping, which seem to have differential effects on the provocation of vascular- versus cardiac-dominant reaction pattern during mental stress were advocated: attention (Attent) versus unpleasant affect (UnplAff). Based on this notion the Attention-Affect Check List (AACL) was developed as a self-report measure. In addition, items on uncontrollability (Uncontr) were prepared for the purpose of checking whether heightened Attent and UnplAff are accompanied by alterations in Uncontr.

Dose escalation study of paclitaxel in combination with fixed-dose irinotecan in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (JCOG 9807).

Background: Both irinotecan (CPT) and paclitaxel (Pac) are effective against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and besides, preclinical studies have demonstrated an additive or synergistic interaction between camptothecin and taxane.

Methods: We conducted a phase I/II study of combination chemotherapy consisting of Pac and CPT to determine qualitative and quantitative toxicities and efficacy of the combination against advanced NSCLC. We fixed the dose of CPT at 60 mg/m(2) and escalated the Pac dose in 10 or 20 mg/m(2) increments from a starting dose of 80 mg/m(2), and repeated the cycle every 2 weeks.

Effects of an educational program on public attitudes towards mental illness.

The World Psychiatric Association promotes global anti-stigma programs. However, evaluation research is crucial to developing effective programs. The present study examined the effects of a lecture on mental health on public attitudes towards mental illness.

Novel crystalloid structures in suprasellar paraganglioma.

A-52-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital because of 2-year history of abnormal behavior and impaired visual acuity. Magnetic resonance imaging delineated a sizable mass at the suprasellar region. The partially removed tumor was arranged in irregular lobules composed of an admixture of clusters of cobblestone-like small cells and process-bearing cells with ovoid nuclei, surrounded by a fine, neuropil-like matrix.

[Application of finger arterial compliance-blood pressure function for an evaluation of the sympathetically mediated vascular tone].

Normalized pulse volume (NPV, Sawada, Tanaka, & Yamakoshi, 2001) was calculated on a beat-to-beat basis by dividing the ac component by the dc component in near-infrared finger photoplethysmogram. Finger arterial compliance index (CI) was obtained by dividing NPV by the respective pulse pressure. Twelve female subjects underwent immersions of the contralateral hand in water at two different temperatures (44 degrees C, 22 degrees C).

[Liposarcoma of the pleural cavity; report of a case].

A 43-year-old-woman who had sever anterior chest pain visited our hospital on April 3, 2000. A well-defined abnormal shadow was seen in the middle and lower field of the right lung on chest X-ray. Computed tomography showed a large fat density mass in the right pleural cavity with a septum enhanced by contrast medium.

Characteristics of trees drawn by patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between schizophrenia subtype and morphological characteristics of trees drawn in the Baum test. Subjects comprised the following three groups: 20 patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia according to International Classification of Diseases (10th revision; ICD-10) criteria; 26 patients with non-paranoid schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria; and 53 healthy individuals. Differences in psychiatric symptoms as assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) score were compared between patients with paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia.

Examination of normalized pulse volume-blood volume relationship: toward a more valid estimation of the finger sympathetic tone.

The pulsatile ac component (DeltaI) superimposed on the transmitted dc components (I: tissue plus blood) are obtained from a near-infrared finger photoplethysmogram using a wavelength of 810 nm. Only the dc component is given in an ischaemic circulatory state (I(t): tissue only). Based on Lambert-Beer's law, normalized pulse volume (NPV; =DeltaI/I) and blood volume [BV; =ln(I(t)/I)] have recently been advocated as quantitative measures.

Phase I/II study of escalating doses of nedaplatin in combination with irinotecan for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.

We conducted a phase I/II study of combination chemotherapy with nedaplatin (NDP) and irinotecan to determine the effects against advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to determine the qualitative and quantitative toxicities of the combination chemotherapy. NDP was given on day 1 and irinotecan on days 1 and 8. The treatment cycle was designed to be repeated every 3 weeks.

Increased expression of integrin beta1 is a poor prognostic factor in small-cell lung cancer.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible association between the expression of integrin beta1 and response to chemotherapy and survival in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). One-hundred and four patients with SCLC, who had received an initial course of chemotherapy between February 1989 and July 1999, were entered into the study. There were 91 males and 13 females, with a median age of 65 years (range 40-85 years).

Oxygenation abnormalities in normoxemic patients with mild liver cirrhosis.

Objective: Nitric oxide (NO) production is enhanced in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). Although most patients with mild LC have neither dyspnea nor platypnea, they might have mild oxygenation abnormalities due to intrapulmonary vasodilatation caused by increased NO. We investigated whether oxygenation abnormalities, such as hypoxemia and orthodeoxia, are present in patients with mild LC.
