Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) -634G>C at the 5' regulatory region of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the risk of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in the Brazilian population of European ancestry with type 2 diabetes.
Research Design And Methods: A case-control study was conducted in 501 type 2 diabetic patients of European ancestry. Patients underwent a standardized clinical, ophthalmological, and laboratory evaluation.
Objective: To evaluate lower urinary tract dysfunction of type 1 familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP) patients in Kumamoto, Japan.
Methods: Lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated in FAP patients. Urodynamic studies were evaluated in FAP patients as compared to those in control subjects.
We have developed a simple and efficient method for protoplast isolation from Pleurotus cornucopiae. Protoplasts were isolated from aerial mycelia cultured on potato dextrose agar medium without time-consuming propagation in liquid culture. Protoplast yield was significantly increased by means of a decompressing pretreatment of mycelia in enzyme solution and a subsequent enzyme reaction with vibrational mixing.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent complex genetic disorder. There has been a worldwide effort in the identification of susceptibility genes for DM and its complications, and the 5-10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and apolipoprotein-E (APOE) genes have been considered good candidate susceptibility genes to this condition. The aim of this study is to assess the stroke risk of asymptomatic intracranial artery stenosis and to compare it with that of extracranial artery disease.
Methods: The study subjects were 2,924 participants (mean age 55 years) without any history of stroke.
Purpose: To evaluate optical coherence tomography as an objective diagnostic and follow-up method for central serous chorioretinopathy.
Methods: Observational descriptive study of 16 (sixteen) eyes of 16 patients with unilateral acute central serous chorioretinopathy. These patients had their visual acuity measured and complete ophthalmological examination was performed, including macular slit lamp examination, angiofluoresceinography and optical coherence tomography.
A 63-year-old female was diagnosed as having Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute myelomonocytic leukemia in June 2002. The patient received monotherapy with imatinib mesylate or combination therapy with DCM and idarubicin/cytarabine, both of which failed in attaining disease remission. However, the second imatinib administration plus CAG therapy resulted in disappearance of the Philadelphia chromosome-positive clone and increase of Philadelphia chromosome-negative cells.

Results: A 62-year-old, female patient presented agitated, complaining of progressive bilateral low vision for the 3 past months, along with anxiety and behavior changes. On examination, she had visual acuity of light perception in the right eye and conting fingers at 30 cm in the left eye; anterior chamber reaction; bilateral hyperemic and edematous optic disc and bilateral serous retinal detachment, yellow-white subretinal peripapillary plaques and subretinal and intraretinal exudation.
The replacement histone H3 gene and its 5'-flanking sequence were isolated from Italian ryegrass by polymerase chain reaction and inverse polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Expression analysis showed that this gene is constitutively expressed in the entire plant. The expression level in leaves was found to be significantly low when compared with that in other tissues.

Each diabetic study has three groups of rats: a control group; a euglycemic group, which received sufficient amounts of insulin; and a hyperglycemic group, which received a suboptimal dose of insulin. Since it is known that chronic administration of receptor antagonists causes up-regulation in the targeted receptor, we examined the effects of chronic administration of doxazosin, a nonspecific long acting alpha1-AR antagonist, on the properties of alpha1-AR subtypes in the rat prostate.
Materials And Methods: Rats were treated with doxazosin (2 or 4 mg/kg daily subcutaneously, supplemented with 4 mg/kg daily orally) for 8 or 12 weeks.
We have previously demonstrated that long-term administration of doxazosin, an alpha(1)-adrenoceptor (alpha(1)-AR) antagonist, causes an up-regulation in the expression of alpha(1)-AR subtype mRNAs in the rat genitourinary tract and suggested that these changes may affect long-term effectiveness of alpha(1)-AR antagonists when used to treat the lower urinary tract symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. As chronic administration of alpha(1)-AR antagonists may cause similar alterations in other tissues in which alpha(1)-ARs play a physiologic role, we examined the effects of long-term administration of doxazosin on the expression of alpha(1)-AR subtype mRNAs in several rat tissues. Rats were treated with doxazosin (4 mg/kg/day subcutaneously, supplemented with 4 mg/kg/day orally) for 12 weeks.
