Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation is the primary risk factor and currently the main treatable factor for progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In addition to direct clinical and living animal in vivo studies, ex vivo perfusion of anterior segments and whole eyes is a key technique for studying conventional outflow function as it is responsible for IOP regulation. We present well-tested experimental details, protocols, considerations, advantages, and limitations of several ex vivo model systems for studying IOP regulation.

In this paper, the sampled-data-based event-triggered tracking control for the positive nonlinear system is discussed. The event-triggered mechanism naturally causes a mismatch between the membership functions of the system model and the fuzzy controller. Meanwhile, the positive constraint and tracking behavior increase the complexity of system analysis and bring conservative analysis results.

To thrive, cancer cells must navigate acute inflammatory signaling accompanying oncogenic transformation, such as via overexpression of repeat elements. We examined the relationship between immunostimulatory repeat expression, tumor evolution, and the tumor-immune microenvironment. Integration of multimodal data from a cohort of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients revealed expression of specific Alu repeats predicted to form double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) and trigger retinoic-acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like-receptor (RLR)-associated type-I interferon (IFN) signaling.

Needle-based injections currently enable the administration of a wide range of biomacromolecule therapies across the body, including the gastrointestinal tract, through recent developments in ingestible robotic devices. However, needles generally require training, sharps management and disposal, and pose challenges for autonomous ingestible systems. Here, inspired by the jetting systems of cephalopods, we have developed and evaluated microjet delivery systems that can deliver jets in axial and radial directions into tissue, making them suitable for tubular and globular segments of the gastrointestinal tract.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a severe disease linked to damage in blood vessels of the lungs and involves the degradation of important proteins, such as BMPR2, by the enzyme cathepsin L, leading to cell death through a process called pyroptosis.
  • Research showed that cathepsin L levels are significantly higher in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, and its inhibition in animal models of PH improved conditions related to the disease, including reduced pressure in the heart and enhanced blood vessel health.
  • The study concludes that cathepsin L contributes to the progression of PH by degrading BMPR2, which triggers a cascade leading to programmed cell death in endothelial cells, highlighting a potential therapeutic target for treating PH.
