Article Synopsis
  • Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) can lead to long-term physical, psychological, and cognitive challenges for ICU survivors, and there's interest in how mitochondrial dysfunction may play a role in this condition.
  • A study analyzed 43 ICU survivors to look for connections between mitochondrial health (through mtDNA markers) and long-term physical functioning, but found no significant correlations between these factors.
  • The research highlights that PICS is influenced by many factors beyond just mitochondrial health, indicating a need for further studies to improve recovery strategies for ICU survivors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Elevated levels of plasma bile acids (BAs) in Cyp2c70 mice lead to changes in heart gene expression, indicating stress and inflammation related to cardiac health in early life.
  • - RNA sequencing revealed 1355 differentially expressed genes in the hearts of mice with high versus low plasma BAs, with many linked to inflammatory processes and cardiovascular disease.
  • - Treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) during pregnancy normalized many of the affected cardiac genes, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits for managing cardiac issues related to elevated BAs.

Article Synopsis
  • Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a serious complication after colorectal cancer surgery that worsens patient outcomes and increases healthcare costs, making bowel perfusion a key factor for healing and reducing AL.* -
  • The study aimed to establish a cut-off value for laser speckle perfusion units (LSPUs) to distinguish between ischemic and well-perfused tissues and evaluate the reliability of different observers in measuring these values.* -
  • Results showed significant differences in LSPU and local capillary lactate (LCL) levels between ischemic and well-perfused tissues, identifying an LSPU cut-off value of 69 and an LCL cut-off of 3.8 mmol/L, indicating that

Introduction: Task specific dystonia is a movement disorder only affecting a highly practiced skill and is found in a broad set of expert movements including in sports. Despite affecting many sports, there is no comprehensive review of treatment options, which is in contrast to better studied forms of task specific dystonia in musicians and writers. For this reason, studies involving an intervention to treat task specific dystonia in sports were systematically reviewed, with special attention for the quality of outcome measures.
