Gd- free carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method using urea, citric acid and 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline as precursors. Additionally, Gd-doped CDs were prepared by incorporating gadolinium chloride (Gd ions) into the synthesis. Size selection of the purified CDs was achieved through filter membranes ranging from 3 kDa to 100 kDa.

During the last few decades, the main focus of numerous studies has been on the human breast milk microbiota and its influence on the infant intestinal microbiota and overall health. The presence of lactic acid bacteria in breast milk affects both the quantitative and qualitative composition of the infant gut microbiota. The aim of this study was to assess the most frequently detected cultivable rod-shaped lactobacilli, specific for breast milk of healthy Bulgarian women and fecal samples of their infants over the first month of life, in 14 mother-infant tandem pairs.

Trace metal Cu and carbonaceous airborn particulate matter (PM) are dangerous neuropollutants. Here, the ability of Cu to modulate the neurotoxicity caused by water-suspended wood smoke PM preparations (SPs) and vice versa was examined using presynaptic rat cortex nerve terminals. Interaction of Cu and SPs, changes of particle size and surface properties were shown in the presence of Cu using microscopy, DLS, and IR spectroscopy.

Mitochondrial forms account approximately 1-2% of all nonsyndromic cases of hearing loss (HL). One of the most common causative variants of mtDNA is the m.1555A > G variant of the MT-RNR1 gene (OMIM 561000).

Previous studies have shown that some lamellarin-resembling annelated azaheterocyclic carbaldehydes and related imino adducts, sharing the 1-phenyl-5,6-dihydropyrrolo[2,1-]isoquinoline (1-Ph-DHPIQ) scaffold, are cytotoxic in some tumor cells and may reverse multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Herein, several novel substituted 1-Ph-DHPIQ derivatives were synthesized which carry carboxylate groups (COOH, COOEt), nitrile (CN) and Mannich bases (namely, morpholinomethyl derivatives) in the C2 position, as replacements of the already reported aldehyde group. They were evaluated for antiproliferative activity in four tumor cell lines (RD, HCT116, HeLa, A549) and for the ability of selectively inhibiting P-gp-mediated MDR.
