Enhancing Salty Taste Perception in Stroke Patients via Anodal Electrical Stimulation to the Chin.

A lower salt intake is an effective management strategy for hypertension and ultimately stroke. However, this strategy compromises the taste of food. To overcome this, a taste manipulation strategey using electronic taste simulation (ETS) has been established, but this has only been studied in healthy individuals.

Axonal TDP-43 aggregates in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Aims: Axonal aggregates of phosphorylated (p-) transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS) were examined in relation to propagation of the protein in the nervous system.

Methods: Brains and spinal cords of Japanese patients with sALS and control subjects were examined immunohistochemically using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens with special reference to the topographical distribution, microscopic features, presynaptic aggregates, and correlation between the aggregates in axons and the clinical course.

Results: (i) Aggregates of p-TDP-43 were frequently present in axons of the hypoglossal and facial nerve fibres and the spinal anterior horn cells.

ANCA-associated vasculitis with central retinal artery occlusion developing during treatment with methimazole.

A 63-year-old woman suddenly developed central retinal artery occlusion following a slight fever while being treated with methimazole (MMI) for hyperthyroidism. She was diagnosed to have anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) based on increased inflammatory reactions with positive myeloperoxidase-ANCA in the serum. Her visual acuity remained low despite immediate treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide after cessation of MMI, which may have played a role in the pathogenesis of AAV.

Cerebral hemorrhage in Fabry's disease.

Fabry's disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder resulting from alpha-galactosidase A deficiency. Although ischemic stroke is recognized as an important manifestation of Fabry's disease, hemorrhagic stroke is considered to be rare. Here, we report our recent clinical experience with three hemizygous male patients with Fabry's disease who developed cerebral hemorrhage.
