Brain calcification, the ectopic mineral deposits of calcium phosphate, is a frequent radiological finding and a diagnostic criterion for primary familial brain calcification. We previously showed that microglia curtail the growth of small vessel calcification via the triggering receptor expressed in myeloid 2 (TREM2) in the mouse model of primary familial brain calcification. Because boosting TREM2 function using activating antibodies has been shown to be beneficial in other disease conditions by aiding in microglial clearance of diverse pathologies, we investigated whether administration of a TREM2-activating antibody could mitigate vascular calcification in mice.

Hip arthroplasty is a common elective surgery worldwide, with rising numbers due to demographic changes and an emphasis on maintaining physical activity in the elderly. The development of new implant designs, especially shorter uncemented stems, has contributed to the advancement of minimally invasive implantation techniques. However, the long-term in vivo behaviour of these implants, particularly regarding subsidence, stability, and stress shielding, remains to be fully understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Physicians can use nystagmus fixation suppression to help diagnose acute vestibular syndrome, but the accuracy of detecting this suppression using simulations by doctors is limited.
  • In a study with 20 doctors, their ability to identify changes in nystagmus was tested under different conditions, revealing that both beginners and experienced physicians struggled similarly.
  • The results showed that small changes in nystagmus velocity were difficult to detect, especially when the baseline nystagmus was strong, indicating that clinical tests for this condition may benefit from additional technology, like video-oculography.

Introduction: Surgical management of popliteal artery aneurysms has been described for half a century. Long term development of the excluded aneurysm sac in the popliteal segment however remains widely unknown, with only a few small series describing outcomes. Residual aneurysm perfusion has the potential to lead to serious complications.

Objective: Complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (cAAA) pose a clinical challenge. The aim of this study was to assess the 30 day mortality and morbidity rates for open aneurysm repair (OAR) and fenestrated or branched endovascular aortic repair (F/B-EVAR), and the effect of hospital volume in patients with asymptomatic cAAA in Switzerland.

Methods: Retrospective, cohort study using data from Switzerland's national registry for vascular surgery, Swissvasc, including patients treated from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2022.
