Introduction: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) presents complex diagnostic challenges due to its multi-organ involvement, often leading to misdiagnosis, which can result in unnecessary treatments, elevated healthcare costs, and significant impacts on patient quality of life. Accurate diagnosis is therefore critical, utilising ACR/EULAR criteria that include both labial minor salivary gland (LMSG) biopsy and anti-SSA antibodies.

Methods: This retrospective study analysed medical records of 87 adults suspected of primary SS, who underwent both anti-SSA serology and LMSG biopsy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review aimed to determine if existing studies on diagnostic accuracy support the current ACR/EULAR guidelines for diagnosing Sjögren's syndrome (SS), focusing on literature from databases like Medline and Embase.
  • - Despite examining three studies, the review found their designs were inadequate, leading to a lack of conclusive findings about the effectiveness of the diagnostic tests for SS, preventing a meta-analysis due to significant differences in methodologies.
  • - The authors concluded that better-designed studies are necessary to either verify the current diagnostic guidelines for SS or propose modifications, as the existing studies did not allow for strong recommendations.
