Demands for engineering applications of high performance polymers, such as the polyaryletherketone families, have grown significantly in recent years. Fundamental knowledge on the mechanical behavior of such polymers, especially under harsh environments, is still lacking. In this study, the mechanical behavior and interfacial phenomena of a blend of polybenzimidazole (PBI) particles having sizes of about 50 μm and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix at 50:50 weight ratio was characterized.

Background: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) secrete key modifiers of tumor progression and their modification has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy. Phenotypic changes that may render TAMs selectively vulnerable to anti-cancer agents were examined.

Materials And Methods: Gene arrays, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting were used to study inflammation- and angiogenesis-related gene expression in co-cultured breast cancer cells and macrophages and to determine how their interactions were affected by tamoxifen and aspirin.

The testing of a fiber-optic distributed-strain sensor attached to a simple structural member is reported. A Brillouin scattering-based sensor system was used to measure both tensile and compressive strains along the length of a cantilever beam subjected to various loads. The sensing fiber was attached to the beam in such a way that some sections experienced uniform strain, whereas others were subjected to a nonuniform strain distribution.

This communication presents the results of T2-weighted nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a water saturated porous volcanic rock using a fast single point imaging technique (turboSPI). Imaging porous materials with heterogeneously distributed mineral products, and air voids, using conventional imaging methods, which introduce T2-weighting by increasing the time between the excitation and refocusing pulses, often results in high diffusive signal losses and susceptibility distortion. T2-weighted images acquired of a water saturated porous rock using turboSPI with an effective echo time of 8.

Forty-eight patients who met the criteria of poor response during prior gonadotropin stimulation were enrolled in a randomized prospective study comparing a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocol, using ganirelix acetate, with a microdose GnRH agonist protocol for in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). This pilot study contributes to the literature of poor response IVF treatment protocols because the use of ganirelix appears to be as effective as the microdose protocol and may be a superior choice in terms of cost and convenience for the patient.
