Intravesical chemotherapy (mitomycin C) versus immunotherapy (bacillus Calmette-Guérin) in superficial bladder cancer.

Both intravesical mitomycin C (MMC) and bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG; Pasteur strain F) were effective in the present prospective randomized multicenter study consisting of 91 patients with frequently recurrent superficial (Ta-T1) bladder cancer. The result was in favour of BCG, as shown by the measurements with complete response (CR), disease-free interval and recurrence rate. CR of 58% with MMC and 40% with BCG were reached in 22 instillation series on carcinoma in situ of 18 patients.

Localization of lactoferrin in the male reproductive tract.

The immunohistochemical localization of lactoferrin in the normal human prostate, seminal vesicle, vas deferens, epididymis and testis was studied using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method at the light and electron microscopical level. Lactoferrin immunoreactivity was localized in the glandular epithelial cells and granulocytes in the prostate and seminal vesicle. In the prostate, lactoferrin showed an uneven distribution; some of the glands contained exclusively positive cells and others were completely lactoferrin negative, while the rest contained scattered positive cells.

In vivo binding of immunoglobulin and complement to elastic structures in urinary bladder vascular walls in interstitial cystitis: demonstration by immunoelectron microscopy.

An ultrastructural immunoperoxidase staining technique was used to identify and localize immune deposits in the urinary bladder vessel walls of patients with interstitial cystitis. Deposition of immunoglobulin together with the C3 component of complement was found in the subendothelial space and in endothelial basement membranes. More peripherally, deposits were often found associated with elastic fibers between smooth muscle cells.

Intrarenal concentration-time profile of ampicillin after administration of bacampicillin to patients before nephrectomy.

Nineteen patients with renal cancer who were to undergo nephrectomy received a single oral dose of bacampicillin 800 mg at approximately three (N = 5), six (N = 7), or nine (N = 7) hours before nephrectomy. Serum samples were taken at 30, 60, and 90 minutes after administration and at nephrectomy. Urine was collected immediately before operation.
