Extracranial Glioblastoma Metastasis: A Neuropathological Case Report.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a central nervous system (CNS) high-grade glioma with a dismal patient prognosis. Classical concepts surrounding GBM development and progression indicate its ability to produce metastasis within the CNS, one of the few primary tumors with such capabilities. While classical concepts state that no primary CNS tumor produces extracranial metastasis, there have been multiple reports of such occurrences over the previous two decades.

Predicting coiled coils by use of pairwise residue correlations.

A method is presented that predicts coiled-coil domains in protein sequences by using pairwise residue correlations obtained from a (two-stranded) coiled-coil database of 58,217 amino acid residues. A program called PAIRCOIL implements this method and is significantly better than existing methods at distinguishing coiled coils from alpha-helices that are not coiled coils. The database of pairwise residue correlations suggests structural features that stabilize or destabilize coiled coils.

[Nonspecific immunotherapy with BCG vaccine in bladder tumors].

Clinical experience is recorded and summarized with the application of BCG vaccine for prophylaxis, treatment and immunochemotherapy of bladder tumors for the period June 1985-January 1988. Included in the study were 85 patients distributed in five groups: 23 patients treated for prevention of relapses; 26 treated for existing and residual surface tumors; 13 in whom BCG vaccine F-70 was applied for prophylaxis purpose; 17 with surface tumors treated only surgically--control group; 10 patients with advanced bladder tumor treated with immunochemotherapeutic agents. BCG vaccine therapy for treatment of superficial bladder cancer.

A total of 42 patients were involved in the study of the effectiveness of BCG vaccine on superficial bladder tumours. The new Bulgarian vaccine CALGEVAX was administered intravesically in consecutive instillations once weekly and then once monthly for a period of 11 months. For intradermal application the F-70 subcellular preparation was used.
