Reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services in humanitarian and fragile settings: A mixed methods study of midwives' and women's experiences.

Insufficient progress has been made to reduce morbidity and mortality for women, children and adolescents particularly in Humanitarian and Fragile settings (HFS). Midwives play a critical and unique role in ensuring communities receive quality and safe essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health services. A lack of knowledge exists on the availability and experiences of midwifery services in HFS.

FIGO/ICM guidelines for preventing Rhesus disease: A call to action.

The introduction of anti-Rh(D) immunoglobulin more than 50 years ago has resulted in only a 50% decrease in Rhesus disease globally owing to a low uptake of this prophylactic approach. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, International Confederation of Midwives, and Worldwide Initiative for Rhesus Disease Eradication have reviewed current evidence regarding the utility of anti-Rh(D) immunoglobulin. Taking into account the effectiveness anti-Rh(D), the new guidelines propose adjusting the dose for different indications and prioritizing its administration by indication.

"The midwife helped me ... otherwise I could have died": women's experience of professional midwifery services in rural Afghanistan - a qualitative study in the provinces Kunar and Laghman.

Background: Afghanistan has one of the world's highest maternal mortality ratios, with more than 60% of women having no access to a skilled birth attendant in some areas. The main challenges for childbearing Afghan women are access to skilled birth attendance, emergency obstetric care and reliable contraception. The NGO-based project Advancing Maternal and Newborn Health in Afghanistan has supported education of midwives since 2002, in accordance with the national plan for midwifery education.
