Viral infections, including respiratory diseases such as Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), are hypothesized to contribute to the onset of autoimmune disorders. Although elevated levels of autoantibodies have been observed following COVID-19, the role of specific autoantibodies linked to autoimmune diseases and their correlation with disease severity remains poorly defined. In this study, we used a comprehensive autoantibody panel to assess the autoantibody production across different cohorts of COVID-19 patients, categorized by disease severity.

Study Objective: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) is a rescue therapy for selected patients when conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) fails. Current evidence suggests that the success of eCPR depends on well-structured in- and out-of-hospital protocols. This article describes the Vienna eCPR program, and the interventions implemented to improve clinical processes and patient outcomes.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is defined as an acute inflammatory syndrome leading to increased pulmonary capillary leakage and subsequent interstitial and alveolar pulmonary edema. Hypoxia is the predominant symptom. The definition of ARDS comprises acute onset, bilateral patchy infiltration on chest X‑ray and a reduction of the ratio of arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO) to the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO), which also determines the classification into mild (≤ 300), moderate (≤ 200) and severe (≤ 100) ARDS.

This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of urinary output at various time intervals during CS and its effectiveness as a predictor of 30-day mortality, particularly in comparison to the Simplified Acute Physiology Score 3 (SAPS 3). : We conducted a retrospective analysis of 96 patients diagnosed with CS, assessing urinary output at different intervals (0-6 h, 6-12 h, 12-24 h, and 0-24 h) as potential predictors of 30-day mortality.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) initiation at a non-ECMO-capable facility by specialized mobile teams aims for a stabilization prior to center admission, internationally referred to as ECMO retrieval. It is a recommended strategy to avoid primary interhospital transfer of compromised patients with a high risk of life-threatening incidents and potentially death. Deploying the unique skill set of ECMO installation and transportation to an unfamiliar environment, however, adds a further degree of complexity to the demanding fields of both transporting the critically ill and ECMO management itself.
