In the quest for finding the ideal synchrotron-radiation-induced imaging method for the investigation of trace element distributions in human bone samples, experiments were performed using both a scanning confocal synchrotron radiation micro X-ray fluorescence (SR-µXRF) (FLUO beamline at ANKA) setup and a full-field color X-ray camera (BAMline at BESSY-II) setup. As zinc is a trace element of special interest in bone, the setups were optimized for its detection. The setups were compared with respect to count rate, required measurement time and spatial resolution.

More than 50 spacecraft debris particles were also identified. The interstellar dust candidates are readily distinguished from debris impacts on the basis of elemental composition and/or impact trajectory.

The aim of the current research was therefore to investigate the hypothesis that dietary Zn toxicity is the result of selective accumulation in tissues that are directly involved in reproduction. Since under field conditions simultaneous exposure to both waterborne and dietary Zn is likely to occur, it was also tested if accumulation and toxicity under combined waterborne and dietary Zn exposure is the result of interactive effects.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA stream of 1-20 μm sized mineral inclusions having the negative crystal shape of its host within an "ultra-deep" diamond from Rio Soriso (Juina area, Mato Grosso State, Brazil) has been studied with confocal μ-X-ray absorption near edge structure (μXANES) at the Fe K and Mn K edges. This technique allows the three-dimensional nondestructive speciation of the Fe and Mn containing minerals within the inclusion cloud. The observed Fe-rich inclusions were identified to be ferropericlase (Fe,Mg)O, hematite and a mixture of these two minerals.
