The seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection was examined in the adult US population and among different ethnic groups. Stored sera from 7465 adult participants in the first phase of the third National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (1988-1991) were tested with a sensitive and specific IgG ELISA, to diagnose infection. With platelets, we have found that butyrate (10 mmol/L) caused an approximately threefold increase in sensitivity to calcium ionophore A23187 and arachidonate. Maximum aggregation was observed at agonist concentrations of 3 mumol/L and 170 mumol/L, respectively, as compared with required concentrations of 10 mumol/L and 400 mumol/L in the absence of butyrate.

A homogeneous population of reconstituted vesicles could be obtained, provided the protein to lipid ratio was high (about 0.3 mol % protein) and the detergent removal was slow.

There was no evidence of enhancement of HCMV by BKV in either cell system; however, in HEL cells under certain conditions, HCMV enhanced the growth rate of BKV. Since both BKV and HCMV are often found in the urine of immunosuppressed patients, the enhancement of BKV by HCMV may be of clinical significance.
