Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of a treatment strategy combining neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NECTORS) followed by surgery in preventing distant metastasis (DM) in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, compared to standard care with concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT).
  • - It includes 342 patients with advanced HPV-positive OPSCC, showing that NECTORS resulted in no cases of distant-only metastasis and fewer overall recurrences than CCRT.
  • - The analysis considers various factors like age, sex, and cancer stage to assess DM-free survival rates, highlighting the potential benefits of NECTORS in reducing treatment-related toxicity.

: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) inhibits vascular calcification which is central to pathogenesis of arterial stiffness. However, it promotes inflammation by upregulating expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1), thereby contributing to arterial stiffness. We investigated longitudinal association between OPG and arterial stiffness in type 2 diabetes (T2D), causality of the association and mediation by VCAM-1.

Article Synopsis
  • About one in three Singaporeans faces a lifetime risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM), often accompanied by other health issues that complicate treatment and management.
  • The study involved 387 participants with self-reported Type 2 DM, analyzing the prevalence of DM complications, their sociodemographic factors, and the impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL).
  • Results showed that 31.6% of participants had DM-related complications, with younger age and higher education correlating with fewer complications; those with chronic conditions faced significant declines in physical and mental HRQOL.

Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common side effect of all types of surgeries, especially so in bariatric surgery. Dexmedetomidine (DX) is an α2-agonist that may be useful as an adjunct prophylactic medication for PONV. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of DX in reducing the incidence and severity of PONV in laparoscopic bariatric surgeries.
