Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and severe disability for young people and a major public health problem for elderly. Many patients with intracranial bleeding are treated too late, because they initially show no symptoms of severe injury and are not transported to a trauma center. There is a need for a method to detect intracranial bleedings in the prehospital setting.

With the aid of the htgs and dbEST databases, a novel cytochrome P450 cDNA was found by homology searches, and the corresponding gene was identified on chromosome 19. Nested PCR was used to amplify a full-length sequence of 1515 bp. The predicted 504 amino acid sequence displays 38--49% identity with CYP2 family members and the protein was designated CYP2S1.

An obligatory role for estrogen in growth, development, and functions of the mammary gland is well established, but the roles of the two estrogen receptors remain unclear. With the use of specific antibodies, it was found that both estrogen receptors, ERalpha and ERbeta, are expressed in the rat mammary gland but the presence and cellular distribution of the two receptors are distinct. In prepubertal rats, ERalpha was detected in 40% of the epithelial cell nuclei.

CYP2A3 was detected by Western blotting in cytochrome P450 fractions isolated from breast of 3-, 6-, and 9-week-old rats but was low during pregnancy and lactation. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and sequencing of the PCR product confirmed the presence and identity of CYP2A3 in the rat breast.
