Background: Up to 50% of blood is transfused inappropriately despite best evidence. In 2020, Choosing Wisely Canada launched a major national programme, 'Using Blood Wisely', the aim was to engage hospitals to audit their red blood cell transfusion use against national benchmarks and participate in a programme to decrease inappropriate use.

Study Design: Using Blood Wisely is a quality improvement programme including national benchmarks, an audit tool, recommended evidence-based effective interventions and a designation to reward success.

Background: Severe T-cell lymphopenia of uncertain clinical significance has been observed in frequent apheresis platelet donors. Two commonly used plateletpheresis instruments are the Trima Accel, which uses a leukoreduction system (LRS) chamber to trap leukocytes and the Fenwal Amicus, which does not use an LRS chamber.

Study Design And Methods: We performed an international, multicenter, observational study comparing T-cell populations in frequent platelet donors collected exclusively using the Trima instrument (n = 131) or the Amicus instrument (n = 77).

Article Synopsis
  • Cold stored platelets (CSP) are better for clot initiation and managing active bleeding, while room temperature platelets (RTP) are preferred for increasing platelet counts in patients needing preventive transfusions.
  • A simulation study compared two hospital scenarios: one using only RTP (No-CSP) and the other using both RTP and CSP (CSP), with findings suggesting that an outside supply of CSP is necessary due to on-site conversion limits.
  • While CSP can improve treatment outcomes for trauma patients, the study concludes that introducing CSP won't significantly reduce RTP wastage, primarily because only a few RTP units can be converted on-site.

Background And Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly influenced unrelated donor (UD) allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collections. Changes included efforts to minimize COVID-19 exposure to donors and cryopreservation of products. The extent to which the efficacy and safety of PBSC donations were affected by the pandemic is unknown.
