Digital holographic microscopy is an imaging process that encodes the 3D information of a sample into a single 2D hologram. The holographic reconstruction that decodes the hologram is conventionally based on the diffraction formula and involves various iterative steps in order to recover the lost phase information of the hologram. In the past few years, the deep-learning-based model has shown great potential to perform holographic reconstruction directly on a single hologram.

We study a two-dimensional low-dissipation nonautonomous dynamical system, with a control parameter that is swept linearly in time across a transcritical bifurcation. We investigate the relaxation time of a perturbation applied to a variable of the system and we show that critical slowing down may occur at a parameter value well above the bifurcation point. We test experimentally the occurrence of critical slowing down by applying a perturbation to the accessible control parameter and we find that this perturbation leaves the system behavior unaltered, thus providing no useful information on the occurrence of critical slowing down.

In seawater, the application of a cathodic current in a metallic structure induces the formation of a calcareous deposit formed by co-precipitation of CaCO and Mg(OH) on the metal surface. A previous study proved that this electrochemical technique is convincing as a remediation tool for dissolved nickel in seawater and that it is trapped as nickel hydroxide in the deposit. Here, the precipitation of a carbonate form with lead is studied.

Article Synopsis
  • A new device for separating fine particles from soil samples uses nitrogen flow in a stainless steel tube.
  • The optimal design is a 6-meter long tube with a 0.04-meter diameter, which efficiently displaces particles.
  • This dry method reduces metal-leaching risks, making it safer for assessing environmental quality in contaminated soils, especially in New Caledonia where metal concentrations are notably high.
