ATP-activated P2X3 receptors play a pivotal role in chronic cough, affecting more than 10% of the population. Despite the challenges posed by the highly conserved structure of P2X receptors, efforts to develop selective drugs targeting P2X3 have led to the development of camlipixant, a potent, selective P2X3 antagonist. However, the mechanisms of receptor desensitization, ion permeation, and structural basis of camlipixant binding to P2X3 remain unclear.

Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is characterized by the compression of the brachial plexus in the thoracic outlet region, caused by various etiologies. We report a case with clinical symptoms and imaging findings from ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of NTOS due to an elongated C7 transverse process and a fibrous band of the middle scalene muscle, which was confirmed in decompression surgery.

Depression is associated with premature mortality, but evidence is mainly derived from Western countries. Very limited research has evaluated shortened lifespan in depression using life-years-lost (LYLs), a recently developed mortality metric taking into account the illness onset for life expectancy estimation. Temporal trends of differential mortality gap are understudied.

Background: The optimal screening interval for diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains controversial. This study aimed to develop a risk algorithm to predict the individual risk of referable sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) in a mainly Chinese population and to provide evidence for risk-based screening intervals.

Methods: The retrospective cohort data from 117,418 subjects who received systematic DR screening in Hong Kong between 2010 and 2016 were included to develop and validate the risk algorithm using a parametric survival model.

Article Synopsis
  • The transition to hemodialysis involves significant psychosocial challenges, and traditional cognitive-behavioral therapies may not be widely accessible, highlighting a gap for positive psychology interventions.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief positive-skills program (HED-Start) for new hemodialysis patients, comparing it against standard care.
  • Results showed that HED-Start led to significant improvements in depression, quality of life, self-efficacy, and coping skills, indicating a beneficial approach for enhancing psychological adjustment in this patient group.
