Purpose: Postoperative wound infections after cochlear implantation are rare but sometimes serious and can lead to explantation. Therefore, perioperative antibiotic administration is often recommended. However, in clinical practice, the type and duration of antibiotic prophylaxis varies between different centers.

Continuous Feature-Based Tracking of the Inner Ear for Robot-Assisted Microsurgery.

Robotic systems for surgery of the inner ear must enable highly precise movement in relation to the patient. To allow for a suitable collaboration between surgeon and robot, these systems should not interrupt the surgical workflow and integrate well in existing processes. As the surgical microscope is a standard tool, present in almost every microsurgical intervention and due to it being in close proximity to the situs, it is predestined to be extended by assistive robotic systems.

Primary head and neck mucosal melanoma: Predictors of survival and a case series on sentinel node biopsy.

Introduction: Head and neck mucosal melanoma (HNMM) is a rare tumor with a poor outcome. The objective of this study was to assess outcome and prognostic factors for a cohort of patients treated in a head and neck cancer center. In addition, a case series on sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) was included to evaluate it as a method for staging the node-negative neck.

Noise reduction in estimating cardiac deformation from marker tracks.

Deformation of the cardiac wall is measured by using optical or radiopaque markers attached to the wall. When digitized images are used, the accuracy of the measurement of a marker position is limited by pixel resolution and the size of the marker. The spatial accuracy is improved by singular value decomposition (SVD) filtering.

Mapping of epicardial deformation using a video processing technique.

A method has been developed to measure deformation of the canine epicardium during the cardiac cycle simultaneously in a number (eight) of small regions (1 X 1 cm2). Approximately 50 white markers (diameter 1.5 mm) are attached to the epicardium and their motion is recorded on tape by a video camera.
