Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes are at high risk of fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke. There is indirect evidence that agonists of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) could reduce macrovascular complications. Our aim, therefore, was to ascertain whether pioglitazone reduces macrovascular morbidity and mortality in high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes.

Objective: Strict metabolic control during the 1st year of type 1 diabetes is thought to be a key factor for achieving clinical remission. The aims of this study were two-fold: (i) to evaluate the frequency and duration of spontaneous remission (defined according to the parameters issued by the International Diabetic Immunotherapy Group (IDIG)) in a European population of consecutive recent onset type 1 diabetes patients (aged 5-35 years), followed-up for a period of 36 months with a common protocol of intensive insulin therapy and without adjunct immune-intervention; and (ii) to identify the predictive factors for clinical remission.
Research Design And Method: A total of 189 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes according to ADA criteria were recruited in participating centres (Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Turkey) and followed-up for a period of up to 36 months.
The aims of our analysis were to obtain the empirical risk estimates for type 1 diabetes in the siblings of a Finnish population-based cohort of childhood-onset diabetic patients and search for demographic and other factors predicting the risk of type 1 diabetes in siblings. We defined the diabetes status of all siblings of all probands who are included in the nationwide register of Finnish cases for whom type 1 diabetes was diagnosed before age 18 years between 1965 and 1979. Siblings' diabetes status was ascertained by a record search of nationwide registries through 2001, and the type of diabetes and date of its manifestation were obtained from medical records.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe purpose of this study was to determine the CCR5-del32 allele frequency in type I (insulin-dependent) and type II (noninsulin-dependent) diabetes patients, and to test whether and how this mutation is associated with both types of diabetes. Thirty-eight type I diabetes and 111 type II diabetes patients' genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction assaying, and amplified products were digested with restriction enzyme EcoRI. The results were analyzed using statistical methods.
