We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

BackgroundThe surveillance of persons hospitalised with COVID-19 has been essential to ensure timely and appropriate public health response. Ideally, surveillance systems should distinguish persons hospitalised with COVID-19 from those hospitalised due to COVID-19.AimWe compared data in two national electronic health registries in Norway to critically appraise and inform the further development of the surveillance of persons hospitalised with COVID-19.

Contemporary population-based data on ovarian cancer survival using current subtype classifications and by surgical status are sparse. We evaluated 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year relative (and overall) survival, and excess hazards in patients with borderline tumors or invasive epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosed 2012 to 2021 in a nationwide registry-based cohort in Norway. Outcomes were evaluated by histotype, FIGO stage, cytoreduction surgery and residual disease.

Aberrant replication causes cells lacking BRCA2 to enter mitosis with under-replicated DNA, which activates a repair mechanism known as mitotic DNA synthesis (MiDAS). Here, we identify genome-wide the sites where MiDAS reactions occur when BRCA2 is abrogated. High-resolution profiling revealed that these sites are different from MiDAS at aphidicolin-induced common fragile sites in that they map to genomic regions replicating in the early S-phase, which are close to early-firing replication origins, are highly transcribed, and display R-loop-forming potential.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence suggests that viral infections might trigger autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), but there is limited understanding of common viruses found in the thyroid gland.
  • The study involved collecting thyroid tissue from 35 AITD patients and 18 controls, testing for the presence of ten different viruses using innovative detection methods.
  • Results showed that 75% of cases had an infectious virus, with enteroviruses and human herpesvirus 6 being the most common, prompting further investigation into their roles in AITD.
