Features of age-related response to sleep deprivation: experimental studies.

Insomnia is currently considered one of the potential triggers of accelerated aging. The frequency of registered sleep-wake cycle complaints increases with age and correlates with the quality of life of elderly people. Nevertheless, whether insomnia is actually an age-associated process or whether it acts as an independent stress-factor that activates pathological processes, remains controversial.

[Modern Approach and Successful Experience of Conservative Treatment of Infantile Hemangiomas with Non-Selective Beta-Blocker Propranolol].

The article deals with the actual problem of modern treatment of infant hemangiomas. The accumulated 10-year experience of using propranolol in 512 patients has shown its effectiveness and safety. The team of authors developed a protocol for managing patients with infantile hemangiomas of various localization at all stages of treatment.

Atmospheric dispersion of radon around uranium mill tailings of the former Pridneprovsky Chemical Plant in Ukraine.

Simulations of atmospheric dispersion of radon around the uranium mill tailings of the former Pridneprovsky Chemical Plant (PChP) in Ukraine were carried out with the aid of two atmospheric dispersion models: the Airviro Grid Model and the CALMET/CALPUFF model chain. The available measurement data of radon emission rates taken in the territories and the close vicinity of tailings were used in simulations. The results of simulations were compared to the yearly averaged measurements of concentration data.

[Investigation of features of EEG changes at psychomotor disturbanses associated with microsleep].

We tested our earlier suggested hypothesis that one of mechanisms for failures of performance of behavioural tasks during microsleep is a spontaneous generation of ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves that suppress transmission of visual information from the retina via lateral geniculate nucleus to primary visual cortical areas and the striatum, and therefore significantly impair visual perception and attention. Experiments were done during the nighttime. Monotonic testing during performance of the two-alternative psychomotor test invoked participants into a state defined as a microsleep with open eyes.

Radioecological assessment and remediation planning at the former uranium milling facilities at the Pridnieprovsky Chemical Plant in Ukraine.

A four year investigation of the largest uranium production legacy site in Ukraine (Pridneprovsky Chemical Plant) has been carried out, including: gamma-dose mapping; indoor and outdoor (222)Rn concentrations; evaluation of tailings sites; as well as preliminary dose calculations for personnel working at the industrial site. This paper provides basic information on remediation planning, on decontamination of the former uranium extraction facilities, and the needs for proper management of the uranium residue in compliance with the best international practice.
