Recently, ultrasound (US) imaging has been used to estimate the cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle, but the reliability is uncertain. To improve the reliability of the US, we investigated skeletal muscle thickness measurement using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to determine the direction of US beam incidence based on posture angle information. In addition, we examined whether the anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA) of muscle can be estimated from the muscle thickness measured using the US with the IMU.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared two types of fixation methods for elderly patients with intertrochanteric femur fractures: a helical blade (Blade group) versus a lag screw (Screw group) using cement augmentation to improve stability Post-surgery.
  • - Researchers evaluated the distribution of cement using CT scans, measuring aspects like maximum penetration depth and cross-sectional areas in various directions after injecting 4.2 mL of cement into both groups
  • - Results indicated that the Screw group had a significantly larger total cement volume compared to the Blade group, although there were no notable correlations with bone mineral density or clinical outcomes like the Parker score.

There is a theoretical debate regarding whether children represent God with reference to a human. Most previous studies have assessed this issue focusing on knowledge/omniscience in western children. This study used a theoretical framework characterising mental capacities in terms of motivational/emotional (experience) and cognitive (agency) mental capacities and tested whether Japanese children discriminated between God, a human, a baby and an invisible agent according to these capacities.

We herein report a case of acute carpal tunnel syndrome due to pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis in the absence of any antecedent injury whose rapid progression and course was similar to that seen with necrotizing fasciitis. This potentially disastrous clinical condition must be promptly recognized, since it needs early surgical management to prevent morbidity.

Two experiments were conducted to assess litter control at a riverside location. Experiment 1 examined the effects of a security camera (presence/absence), past littering (presence/absence), and environmental features (tussock/plain ground/flowerbed). Two scenes containing combinations of these factors were presented.
