Background: Complex segmentectomy for uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) remains controversial due to procedural complexity and the risk of increased complications, unlike multiportal VATS. Demonstrating the perioperative results and proficiency of individual surgeon is believed to influence future dissemination for uniportal VATS. In this study, we aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes and learning curves of complex versus simple segmentectomy for uniportal VATS.

Determination of Plasmalogen Molecular Species in Hen Eggs.

(1) Background: Plasmalogens are vinyl ether-type glycerophospholipids that are characteristically distributed in neural tissues and are significantly reduced in the brains of individuals with dementia compared to those in healthy subjects, suggesting a link between plasmalogen deficiency and cognitive decline. Hen eggs are expected to be a potential source of dietary plasmalogens, but the details remain unclear. (2) Methods: We evaluated the fresh weight, dry weight, total lipid, neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids in the egg yolk and egg white of hen egg.

Association of maternal blood and umbilical cord blood plasma fatty acid levels with the body size at birth of Japanese infants.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), mainly obtained from fish, have been implicated in fetal development. Because few studies have examined maternal and umbilical cord blood fatty acid levels and infant body size in Japan with a fish-eating culture, we examined differences in plasma fatty acid levels in pregnant women and infant size at birth. This study is a large birth cohort study of 1476 pairs of Japanese pregnant women and their infants.

Assessing and harnessing updated polyketide synthase modules through combinatorial engineering.

The modular nature of polyketide assembly lines and the significance of their products make them prime targets for combinatorial engineering. The recently updated module boundary has been successful for engineering short synthases, yet larger synthases constructed using the updated boundary have not been investigated. Here we describe our design and implementation of a BioBricks-like platform to rapidly construct 5 triketide, 25 tetraketide, and 125 pentaketide synthases to test every module combination of the pikromycin synthase.
