Purpose: To report the outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for high myopia between -9.00 and -14.00 diopters (D).

The West Nile virus epidemic in Arkansas, 2002: the Arkansas Department of Health response.

In June 2002, the Arkansas Department of Health anticipated a West Nile virus epidemic based on diagnoses in birds and increasing reports of human disease cases in neighboring states. Department officials activated an emergency operations center (EOC) dedicated to human West Nile virus surveillance. As a result, 43 cases (33 West Nile meningoencephalitis and 10 West Nile fever) and five (12%) deaths were confirmed from 16 counties.

Placentoid bullous lesion of the lung.

Four adult patients presented with unilateral multicystic lung disease. The cysts had been detected years previously on chest radiographs in three patients. Two patients had histories of repeated childhood pneumonias.

Epidemiologic characteristics of human tularemia in the southwest-central states, 1981-1987.

From 1981 through 1987, a total of 1,041 cases of tularemia in humans were reported in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas; this represents 60% of the cases reported in the United States during this same time period. The state of Arkansas reported the highest total (420 cases). Annual incidence rates per one million population ranged from 36.

Circannual incidence of Giardia lamblia.

A circannual rhythm of Giardia lamblia positive stools was found by examination of records from three clinical laboratories in central Arkansas for the period 1980-1986. Cosinor analysis of monthly Giardia incidence based on stool specimen records from approximately 12,000 patients over the 7-year period revealed a circannual rhythm (P less than 0.001) on the basis of percent positive patients/month, with a computive acrophase occurring in late summer and minimum values in the winter.
